Red Sox Linked To Potential Shocking Signing Of $152 Million Slugger

Let’s face it. The Pete Alonso sweepstakes is realistically going to be won by the New York Mets. But the Mets haven’t re-signed the slugger yet, no matter how obvious the fit seems. So that allows the mind to wonder why. Why haven’t the Mets signed him yet? Are there other reasonable suitors?

Yes, there are other suitors. Jon Heyman of the New York Post actually went through a list of potential suitors, though none of them make more sense than the Mets. But, as Heyman listed the potential teams in the sweepstakes, he named the Boston Red Sox, which is quite an intriguing fit.

“After a 48-hour frenzy of first base signings/trades (Paul Goldschmidt, Carlos Santana, Josh Naylor, Nathaniel Lowe), potential options include the (San Francisco) Giants, (Seattle) Mariners, (Texas) Rangers, and (Los Angeles) Angels, and possibly the (Chicago) Cubs or Red Sox if they open up first base via trade,” Heyman wrote.

If the Red Sox open first base via a trade, which means trading away Triston Casas, they would be a very good fit for Alonso. Casas is one of the Red Sox’s biggest trade chips and he could be used in a blockbuster deal to acquire a star outfielder or pitcher.

This is one of the first times the Red Sox have been mentioned as an Alonso suitor. Though it’s unlikely Boston will take this route, it’s certainly intriguing to think about because the Red Sox have the money to bring the slugger to Fenway Park.
