The Kansas City Chiefs are entering Week 16 with a short turnaround after their 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The Chiefs are set to play the Houston Texans on Saturday, a short week before they play a few days later on Christmas against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Kansas City Chiefs have a short turnaround this week
The short time in between outings has put quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ status for Saturday’s game into question. The star quarterback suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Browns, and the team could turn to veteran backup Carson Wentz to help keep the team’s lead for the No. 1 spot in the AFC. The Chiefs have a two-game lead on the Buffalo Bills.
Fortunately for Wentz, the Chiefs are set to get a key wide receiver back on the 53-man roster. Kansas City activated Marquise Brown’s 21-day practice window last week. On Monday, the Chiefs waived running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, making room for a player on the 53-man roster, which is expected to be Brown.
Andy Reid wouldn’t mind getting a former player back
Per Jordan Foote with Sports Illustrated, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he would like for Kansas City to bring Edwards-Helaire back in the future.
“We sure appreciated Clyde for all he did here,” Reid said. “And would love to get him back sometime, too. What a great kid he is.”

The 25-year-old running back was a first-round pick by the Chiefs in 2020. He ran for 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first four seasons in Kansas City. Edwards-Helaire signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs in April but was placed on the NFI list before Week 1.
The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native has no stats for the 2024 season. Edwards-Helaire was not claimed on waivers Tuesday and became a free agent. He’s free to sign with the Chiefs should another injury happen in the backfield before the postseason.
