BREAKING: Braves add bullpen depth with Jordan Weems signing

MLB: JUL 21 Reds at Nationals

The Braves have been absolutely radio silent to this point in the offseason. Not only have they yet to make a substantial splash, but they haven’t really been connected to anything.

Of course, the Braves are known for operating with extreme discretion, keeping their plans close to the vest. Still, it’s been an unusually uneventful offseason. To this point, Atlanta has only made minor depth improvements, a trend that continued on Tuesday with the signing of Jordan Weems, as reported by Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors.

Weems is coming off a season in which he appeared in 41 games for the Washington Nationals, recording a gaudy 6.70 ERA and 1.752 WHIP. He gave up over ten hits and five walks per nine innings; however, he was much more productive in 2023, recording a 3.62 ERA and 9.9 K/9 over 51 appearances.

With Luke Jackson, Jesse Chavez, and A.J. Minter all currently free agents—and Joe Jimenez expected to miss most of the 2025 season after knee surgery—the Braves have a lot of bullpen innings to replace. Weems will have an opportunity to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster during Spring Training. He brings a big arm and flashes of untapped potential, but his addition still feels more like depth rather than a definitive solution.

As Christmas approaches, it’s hard to ignore the Braves’ lack of action this winter. Alex Anthopoulos assured fans that payroll would increase again and that the luxury tax wouldn’t deter significant acquisitions. Yet so far, it appears the front office may be working with a tighter budget than many anticipated.

With critical holes still to fill, the clock is ticking for Anthopoulos to deliver the moves Braves fans have been eagerly waiting for.
