WHITE SOX STRIKE AGAINST ROYALS: TIMELY HITTING AND CLUTCH HOME RUNS PROPEL WIN
CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago White Sox (20-21) continue their hot streak, earning a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals (19-23) to secure their third consecutive win. The game was full of offensive fireworks, with four of the Sox’s seven hits going for extra bases, including three home runs and a double. Two of the bombs were particularly timely, taking the lead at different points in the game and shifting the momentum in the Sox’s favor.
While the pitching staff had its struggles early, particularly Erick Fedde, the offense carried the team for much of the game, keeping them in the contest until the bullpen established some much-needed stability late in the game. The final two arms of the bullpen came up huge, throwing three hitless innings to preserve the win.
FEDDE STRUGGLES, BUT THE OFFENSE RESPONDS
It wasn’t the cleanest outing for Erick Fedde, but he managed to eat up five innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking one, and striking out two. Fedde’s performance was marred by yet another pair of home runs — a solo shot by Bobby Witt Jr. and another by Salvador Pérez in the top of the first inning, giving the Royals an early 2-0 lead.
This was the latest instance in a season-long issue for Fedde, who has struggled with the long ball, but he did manage to settle in after those early mistakes. The Sox offense was tasked with catching up, and they did just that by staying patient and getting timely hits, with their first real opportunity arriving in the bottom of the third inning.
OFFENSE COMES ALIVE: FIVE-RUN FIFTH INNING CHANGES THE GAME
The White Sox were down by two until the bottom of the fifth inning when the offense erupted for a five-run inning, swinging the game in their favor. Drew Romo sparked the rally with his fourth home run of the season, cutting the lead to 2-1. Though Romo struck out in all his other at-bats, his timely home run gave the Sox the spark they needed.
After Sam Antonacci led off with a base hit and Munetaka Murakami and Miguel Vargas both walked, the bases were loaded with one out. Colson Montgomery came to the plate in a prime situation but struck out on a pitch that was clearly outside the strike zone. A frustrating at-bat for Montgomery, but the Sox didn’t let it derail their momentum.
Next up was Chase Meidroth, who made sure to make the most of the opportunity, blasting his third home run of the season into the White Sox bullpen, giving the team a 5-2 lead. Meidroth’s blast was a huge moment for the Sox, giving them a three-run cushion after previously battling to catch up.
THE ROYALS BATTLE BACK: SCHWEITZER STRUGGLES AND BLOWN SAVE
However, the game wasn’t as smooth sailing as it seemed. After Fedde was pulled in favor of Tyler Schweitzer, the game’s momentum shifted once again. Schweitzer gave up two runs in just one-third of an inning, allowing the Royals to crawl back into the game, cutting the Sox’s lead to 5-4. The bullpen continued to struggle as Schweitzer’s inability to close out innings left the game hanging in the balance.
Manager Will Venable called on Grant Taylor, who was tasked with cleaning up the mess left by Schweitzer. Taylor was solid in his outing but was charged with a blown save after allowing a single run in the eighth inning, which tied the game at 5-5. Despite his blown save, Taylor struck out Carter Jensen and Jac Caglianone to avoid further damage and give the offense a chance to take the lead.
DEREK HILL THE HERO: CLUTCH PINCH-HIT HOME RUN PUTS SOX UP 6-5
In the bottom of the eighth inning, with the game tied, Derek Hill came up as a pinch hitter, and what he did next was nothing short of heroic. Hill took an inside pitch well below the strike zone and muscled it over the left-center field wall for a go-ahead home run that put the Sox back on top, 6-5. It was a clutch moment for Hill, who delivered the decisive blow at the perfect time.
BRYAN HUDSON SHUTS DOWN THE ROYALS IN THE NINTH
The game was far from over, but the Sox bullpen finally closed things out in the ninth. Bryan Hudson, who has been a revelation for the White Sox this season, came in for the save. Hudson, in his 21 appearances this season, has been almost unhittable, and tonight was no exception. He got the Royals in order in the ninth, including a spectacular diving catch by Derek Hill in right field to rob a potential base hit from Bobby Witt Jr. to secure the 1-2-3 inning and his second save of the season.
LOOKING AHEAD: NOAH SCHULTZ DAY TOMORROW
The White Sox will take a much-needed breath after a hard-fought win and will look to build on their momentum tomorrow when they send left-hander Noah Schultz to the mound against righty Seth Lugo of the Royals. With Schultz on the mound, the Sox will look to keep the winning streak alive and push their record to .500 for the first time this season.
Tomorrow’s game, set for 6:40 p.m. CT, promises to be another exciting contest in what has already been a thrilling series. The White Sox will need another solid performance from their pitching staff, especially in the bullpen, as they look to solidify their position in the AL Central.
