The Detroit Lions continued searching for additional pass-rush depth this weekend as rookie minicamp created several unexpected breakout performers inside the organization.
With competition intensifying throughout Detroit’s defensive front, multiple young defenders reportedly drew attention from coaches during drills, conditioning sessions, and offseason evaluations.
League observers believe the Lions remained especially focused on identifying developmental EDGE rushers capable of fitting the aggressive defensive identity established by head coach Dan Campbell.
According to reports, the Detroit Lions finalized a deal with undrafted EDGE defender Eric O’Neill following an impressive showing during offseason evaluations and rookie minicamp workouts.
League insiders reportedly believe O’Neill quickly stood out because of his explosiveness, motor, and ability to consistently pressure the quarterback during drills.
The coaching staff reportedly became increasingly intrigued by his combination of power, burst, and relentless pursuit throughout the weekend.
O’Neill entered the NFL after an unusual collegiate journey that included stops at Long Island University, James Madison, and Rutgers.
The 6-foot-3, 247-pound EDGE defender initially exploded onto the national radar during his dominant season at James Madison.
During that campaign, O’Neill recorded 13 sacks while earning a massive 90.3 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus.
After transferring to Rutgers for his final collegiate season, his sack totals dropped to 2.5 against significantly stronger Big Ten competition.
However, league evaluators reportedly remained impressed with his pressure consistency and physical development despite the reduced sack production.
According to reports, O’Neill still generated 41 pressures during his Rutgers season after recording 50 the previous year at James Madison.
That production reportedly reinforced Detroit’s belief that his pass-rushing upside could translate to the NFL with continued development.
The Lions have aggressively prioritized pass-rush depth throughout the offseason after drafting Derrick Moore in the second round and adding Tyre West later in the draft.
Detroit also added veteran edge defenders DJ Wonnum and Payton Turner earlier this offseason.
Still, league insiders reportedly believe O’Neill has a legitimate chance to force his way into roster conversations entering training camp.
The young pass rusher impressed scouts throughout the pre-draft process after recording 27 bench press reps at 225 pounds while showcasing strong edge-setting ability against the run.
Observers also praised his pursuit angles and relentless effort, including a standout 10-tackle performance against Maryland during his Rutgers season.
There are still concerns regarding his ability to consistently finish sacks and tackles against higher-level competition.
However, Detroit reportedly believes his competitiveness and pressure generation make him a developmental player worth investing in.
