The Detroit Lions didn’t leave the 2026 NFL Draft empty-handed. They addressed key areas on the edge, adding young pass rushers to support Aidan Hutchinson and strengthen their ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks.
But one need remained. While the outside improved, the interior defensive line quietly became a concern — especially after offseason departures thinned the depth in the middle.
According to reports, the Lions have now taken action, submitting a trade offer to the Cincinnati Bengals for veteran defensive tackle T.J. Slaton, a 6-foot-5, 340-pound interior presence coming off a career-best season, with Detroit offering a 2027 fifth-round pick to acquire him.
“We know what we need inside. It’s about adding toughness and consistency — someone who can control the line and let the rest of the defense play fast,” a team source shared regarding the move.
Slaton delivered strong production in 2025, recording 52 total tackles, 3 sacks, and 7 quarterback hits. His size and ability to anchor against the run make him an ideal fit for a Detroit defense looking to regain balance up front.
From Cincinnati’s perspective, the timing makes sense. After adding new talent to their defensive line this offseason, Slaton’s role may be reduced, making him a logical trade candidate.
For the Lions, this is a calculated move. Slaton is entering the final year of his contract with a manageable salary, making him a low-risk addition that doesn’t interfere with long-term roster planning.
More importantly, he fills a gap that the draft did not fully address. While rookies bring upside, Detroit clearly wants a proven presence to compete immediately in the trenches.
If completed, this deal could quietly become one of the most important moves of the Lions’ offseason — reinforcing a defensive front built to contend.
