There might not be another MLB manager with as much pressure as Boston Red Sox clubhouse presence Alex Cora. Boston is 9-17 this season, has lost five straight, and might be starting to lose buy-in from fans about this team.

The Red Sox entered the 2026 season with playoff expectations after a very active offseason, making several additions. Boston is currently taking on the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game weekend series. The Orioles beat the Red Sox 10-3 on Friday night, as Brayan Bello had a rough outing (3.1 IP, 8H, 8ER, 5HR). Following the game, Alex Cora issued a very honest statement about his team, and it’s one that fans might not be too joyous about.

‘We Got A Bunch of Kids’ Says Red Sox Manager on Current Roster

GettyThe Red Sox are struggling. While manager Alex Cora isn’t likely to be fired, that doesn’t mean everybody is safe.

Per Tyler Milliken, here is what Alex Cora told reporters following the Friday night loss:

“We got a bunch of kids that are learning the game, it’s my job to keep teaching them the game.”

While I understand what Cora is trying to say here, it’s just not something you want to hear from your MLB manager in the midst of a tough losing stretch.

The Red Sox do have a plethora of young players (Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, etc). However, there are plenty of veterans in the Red Sox clubhouse as well (Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, Trevor Story, Ranger Suarez, Garrett Crochet). Are those guys still learning the game too?

Does Alex Cora still have to teach the likes of Story, Crochet, and Suarez how to play the game as well? It’s a very honest statement by Cora, but it’s one the Red Sox manager would have been better off if he had kept in his back pocket.

What Needs to Change in Boston?

The Red Sox are one of three MLB teams (New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies) that have underperformed drastically through the first month of the season.

While there’s plenty of baseball ahead, being swept by the New York Yankees and then being on the verge of losing another series against a divisional opponent isn’t the position the Red Sox want to be in right now.

So, what needs to change in Boston? Does Alex Cora need to be fired? Does Craig Breslow need to make another early-season blockbuster trade (like Rafael Devers last season)?

Boston Red Sox Manager Alex Cora Makes Honest Statement

Although the reports of Alex Cora’s job security haven’t really materialized, having close to 20 losses before April wraps up isn’t ideal, and the current injury concern surrounding star outfielder Roman Anthony doesn’t seem too promising either.
