Caleb Downs (R) of Ohio State poses with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (L) after being selected eleventh overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys during Round One of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Well, that went over well. The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2026 NFL draft hopeful that one of the top defensive talents available on the board would fall to them at No. 12, that they could further address the defense that was rated the worst in the NFL last season, coughing up 511 points. Not only did the Cowboys get a talent, but they got a player some consider the best overall, and possibly the smartest, player in the incoming class: safety Caleb Downs.
Say what you will about the team’s secondary in 2025, the Cowboys have made a concerted effort to clean up what was a brutal coverage unit here in 2026, and it starts in the safety room. Two of the team’s top free-agent investments came at safety this winter, with the addition of Jalen Thompson and PJ Locke. The Cowboys are keeping veteran Malik Hooker, too, and now adding Downs to the mix. It is a remarkable beefing up of the safety room, a focus for new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
And to just add to it all: The Cowboys are getting rave reviews.
Cowboys Get ‘Star Nickel in Caleb Downs’
ESPN NFL reporter and host Peter Schrager has been one of those pushing the possibility of Downs landing in Dallas for quite some time, though he backed off late in the process, predicting in his final mock draft that Downs would be gone before the Cowboys picked. He should have stuck with his gut, it seems.
Now, for the Cowboys to add Downs to the mix, the team has scored a major draft win. Noted Ted Nguyen of The Athletic, “Christian Parker gets his star nickel in Caleb Downs. Has to be ecstatic. Heard he was basically installing teams defenses to coaches for them in meetings by diagnosing their systems watching film.”
Cowboys Declared an A-Plus
Schrager, speaking on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” NFL draft coverage, said the Cowboys have already aced the NFL draft.
He ranted: “The Cowboys, to get Caleb Downs, most GMs if you took a survey a week ago would have said there’s no chance he is going to be sitting there at No. 12. Well, they move up one spot and they get who arguably might be the smartest player in this draft, and who arguably might immediately be the smartest player, as far as seeing everything, on their defense, from Day One. So, they’re doing flips. If I am giving out grades right now, the Dallas Cowboys have already won the draft. A-plus. The value of getting that player this late for a team that needed it so badly, this is everything. The stars aligned.
“You’ve got to be doing flips. You got Caleb Downs. The guy’s the face of the franchise.”
Caleb Downs ‘Puts His Stamp on Games’
From the NFL.com scouting report on the newest Dallas Cowboys safety:
“Productive, high-effort safety with three years of starting experience in big games at Alabama and Ohio State. Downs is an alpha who brings immense juice on each snap. He’s at his best when deployed near the line as a box safety or big nickel back. He’ll gamble a little bit as a run defender, but he makes more than enough disruptive plays near the line of scrimmage to make up for it. … Downs isn’t the biggest, fastest or most versatile player, but he consistently puts his stamp on games.”
