Unless you’re a fan of the San Francisco 49ers, odds are you do not appreciate Brock Purdy for what he has accomplished in his NFL career. Not just as a seventh-round pick, but the 2022 Mr. Irrelevant, Purdy’s story of resilience should make him a fan favorite, but instead, he gets far too much criticism.

At every turn Purdy has been slandered even though he has shattered every possible expectation week in and week out. The narratives following him have labeled him as a “system quarterback” in the perfect situation for a young QB, but Kyle Juszczyk is setting out to quiet those discussions for good.

While appearing on the Jim Rome Show, Juszczyk had nothing but good things to say about his quarterback, both on and off the gridiron. He’s starting to get tired of all of the disrespect towards Purdy, even citing him as “the most competitive person in the world” at one point during the interview.

“”I don’t know what it’s gonna take for this guy to finally get the respect I think he truly deserves. I don’t know if it’s just the fact that he’s not a first-round draft pick. Is that gonna be the story for his entire career?””

Juice’s argument is that because Purdy isn’t a first-round pick, he’s not looked at as “elite” by the masses despite his success. Guys like Justin Fields and Zach Wilson have received opportunity after opportunity for being a former first-round pick, but because the 26-year-old was a Day 3 guy, he doesn’t get the same benefit of the doubt. It’s the same treatment Tom Brady got during his career.

The narrative surrounding Purdy is that he’s propped up by the best possible situation, especially the opportunity to learn under an all-time great play-caller in Kyle Shanahan. Do you think he chose where he wanted to get drafted? At that point, all you can do is play with the hand that you’re dealt.

Is Purdy fortunate for entering the NFL in the situation he did? Absolutely. It isn’t every day you get to throw to Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle (and later Christian McCaffrey) to start your career, but that doesn’t mean the Niners’ supporting cast deserves the credit for his success.

Purdy still started his NFL career as the third-string QB behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, yet was so impressive in his first few starts that the next offseason, the 49ers traded Lance to Dallas for pennies on the dollar after trading two first-rounders in order to pick him not even two years earlier.

Shanahan’s system has always been QB-friendly. but not everyone is $265 million worthy. Jimmy G plateaued after the Super Bowl run, and Mac Jones and Sam Darnold just needed a change of scenery. The reason that Shanahan continues to roll with Purdy as QB1 is because nobody is as smart as him.

The 10-time Pro Bowler is merely saying what NFL fans need to hear. You can question Purdy and credit his success to the situation, but that would be doing a disservice to the player. Purdy might not be in the Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson tier, he’s a guy you can win with and people want to play with.

Juszczyk’s words should ring true: it doesn’t matter what the masses think when the guys in the 49ers’ locker room are rallying behind him and seeing him as one of the best in the business.
