San Francisco 49ers CB Darrell Luter

The San Francisco 49ers are taking every opportunity they can to shore up their secondary heading into next season.

With a cornerbacks room that already features Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, Upton Stout, Darrell Luter, and Eli Apple, the 49ers added another impact player in former Green Bay Packers CB Nate Hobbs this offseason.

San Francisco wasn’t done adding corners, however, as the team also signed former Miami Dolphins CB Jack Jones on Friday.

Jones’ Arrival Could Push 2025 Starter Out of Picture

The 28-year-old Jones started 23 games over the last two seasons with the Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders.

He recorded 146 tackles, 22 passes defended, 4 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles over that span, and he’s likely to make a serious push for playing time in the 49ers’ defensive backfield in 2026.

In fact, ESPN’s David Lombardi believes the addition of Jones could put one 49ers 2025 starter’s job in jeopardy.

“If the 49ers don’t make a move for a CB in the draft, the signing of Jack Jones — barring injury issues at the position — might push Darrell Luter Jr. out of the picture,” Lombardi posted on X.

“49ers have added Jones (outside CB) and Nate Hobbs (best at inside CB) as depth thus far in FA. Hobbs might even take over the big nickel spot formerly held by Jason Pinnock.”

Luter started 3 games for the 49ers last season. He played 184 coverage snaps, allowing 12 catches on 18 targets, 162 yards, and 2 touchdowns with 2 forced incompletions and a pass defended, according to Pro Football Focus. He also added 28 tackles and a fumble recovery.

It’s expected Lenoir, Green, Stout, and Hobbs will be San Francisco’s top four CBs, Jones, Apple and Siran Neal are expected to compete for the next few spots, and Luter could find himself the odd man out.

What Jones Brings to the 49ers Defense

Jones was the most productive Dolphins CB in 2025. He ranked fourth on the team in tackles (77), and he added 4 tackles for loss, 6 passes defended, 6 forced incompletions, 2 forced fumbles, and an interception. He allowed a 64.8 completion percentage against while playing 572 coverage snaps, per PFF.

Jones also shines when playing in man coverage — a hallmark of new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris’ defensive scheme, and he could be a perfect complement to a well-rounded secondary that features a strong mix of skills with Lenoir, Green, and Stout.

Most analysts refer to Jones as a ball hawk, though he has been known to get burned in coverage because of his aggressive play style. But of Jones’ 8 career interceptions, four of them have been returned for touchdowns.

He also has 33 pass breakups in his 59 career games, and he knows how to make plays on the ball. If there was a defensive system that’s tailor-made for Jones’ skillset, it would be the one San Francisco plans to run under Morris next season.
