The 49ers went 5-3 in Jones’ starts, remaining in the playoff hunt while Purdy recovered. Jones finished the season completing nearly 70 percent of his passes for 2,151 yards, with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions—production that drew attention across the NFL.

That performance naturally sparked speculation about Jones’ future, and whether the 49ers might trade the veteran quarterback to acquire additional draft capital.

Following the season, head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted he would be surprised if Jones were not on the roster in 2026. Still, speculation persisted, with some believing quarterback-needy teams could present an offer too strong for San Francisco to ignore.

Ultimately, Jones’ market did not develop as expected. The 49ers were reportedly unwilling to move him without receiving significant draft compensation—more than most teams were prepared to offer. Some described San Francisco’s asking price as “astronomical.”

Speaking to reporters Monday at the NFL meetings in Phoenix, Arizona, Shanahan was asked if there was ever a point this offseason when he thought the 49ers might lose Jones. The coach offered a simple, clear response.

“No, there wasn’t,” Shanahan said, shaking his head.

With NFL teams, including the 49ers, now turning their focus to the 2026 NFL Draft, Jones appears set to remain in San Francisco and fulfill the two-year deal he signed in 2025. That’s welcome news for the 49ers, who value having a reliable backup behind Purdy heading into the upcoming season.
