Chiefs Sign Rival Super Bowl Starter in Surprise Offseason Prediction

The Kansas City Chiefs will be forced to make some tough decisions about their offensive line this offseason. Right guard Trey Smith is likely to hit free agency and they’ll need to decide if they want to re-sign left tackle D.J. Humphries.

The Chiefs brought Humphries in Week 12 to be an in-season fix for left tackle. However, Humphries ended up getting hurt in his first game back, raising questions as to whether he is a solution for the next few seasons. As a result, in a recent article, one writer is projecting that the Chiefs will sign Bengals Pro Bowl tackle Trent Brown this offseason.

This is what Bleacher Report had to say about the potential signing:

” The 31-year-old tore his patellar tendon in Week 3 and won’t be returning this season. His size is only going to make his recovery more difficult, but the tackle has always been a solid pass protector.”

– Bleacher Report

The Chiefs signing Brown could be seen as a high-risk high-reward type of signing, like the Humphries one. As Bleacher Report mentions, Brown will be entering his age-32 season coming off of a knee injury. Players start to decline in ability as they get older and for Brown that could only compound coming off a serious injury.

Despite this, the benefit of signing brown might be to great t pass up. Throughout 10 NFL seasons, Brown has allowed 24 sacks, 40 QB hits, 120 QB hurries and 184 QB pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. Although Brown has done a good job protecting quarterbacks in his career he has had trouble staying on the field only playing three full seasons in ten years.

Even so, the Chiefs’ best bet might be to take a swing on Brown. While that could put them back in the situation they are in this season, it may also work out.

If Brown is indeed the best left tackle option available on the open market, it will be interesting to see if Brett Veach pursues him.
