Kansas City Chiefs Considering Changing Offensive Starters Position Amid Injuries

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly looking into making a change on offense with four games left in the regular season. The Chiefs have been hammered with injuries in 2024, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

The Chiefs did get good news this week on the injury front when they opened up kicker Harrison Butker’s and wide receiver Marquise Brown’s 21-day practice window. Butker has been on injured reserve for four weeks due to a knee injury.

Brown has been out since the preseason due to a shoulder injury he suffered in Kansas City’s first preseason game.

DJ Humphries suffered an injury on Sunday night

The Chiefs had another troubling injury occur during their 19-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Recently signed veteran DJ Humphries suffered a hamstring issue. The veteran left tackle was brought in amid second-year left Wanya Morris and rookie offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia being benched at various times this season.

Per the Chiefs injury report on Wednesday, Humphries did not participate in practice.

The Chiefs could ask Joe Thuney to switch positions

Per Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Chiefs are exploring moving offensive guard Joe Thuney to left tackle if Humphries cannot play. Thuney has played some at left tackle, taking over the position during Kansas City’s 19-17 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 13. However, he could be asked to start at the position in future games.

“The Chiefs are hoping for the best with newly signed tackle D.J. Humphries, who left his Chiefs debut on Sunday night with a hamstring injury,” Graziano wrote. “They were sending him for an MRI earlier this week with the hope that he wouldn’t have to miss time.

If he does, the staff in Kansas City believes Wanya Morris played better in relief of Humphries on Sunday than he had in recent weeks, and they have hope that he can improve. The Chiefs recognize their pass protection problems and are open to all possible solutions, even if that means moving veteran guard Joe Thuney to left tackle, as they did during their Week 13 victory over the Raiders.”

Thuney has been with the Chiefs since the 2021 season. He’s earned All-Pro honors three times and two Pro Bowl appearances.

At 32, Thuney has played and started in 142 games. The six-foot-five, 304-pound offensive lineman has primarily played at left guard in his career.
