In a surprising development that has sent ripples through the NFL, ESPN senior insider Adam Schefter expressed significant doubts about the long-term future of former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens with the Dallas Cowboys.
After being traded from the Steelers to the Cowboys ahead of the 2025 season, Pickens delivered a career-best performance. He recorded 93 receptions for 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, leading the Cowboys in receiving and proving himself as a true No. 1 wideout. Despite this standout year, he was notably snubbed from Pro Bowl selection, adding to the intrigue surrounding his situation.
However, with the 2026 offseason underway, Pickens’ path forward in Dallas appears far from certain.
Schefter Drops Major Insight on Pat McAfee Show
Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, Schefter shared a candid assessment of the contract standoff. He indicated that a long-term extension for Pickens seems unlikely in the near term and could drag on until just before the mid-July deadline.

“I’m skeptical that there will be an extension. It’s early. It’s April 2nd,” Schefter said. “But George Pickens is not allowed to be in that building unless he signs the franchise tender. He’s not going to sign that franchise tender without there being a long-term deal. I don’t see a long-term deal coming into focus until right before the deadline, which will be the middle of July. Which tells you that there’s a real probability that George Pickens will not be there for the offseason program… I just think it’s set up right now to be a very tricky, challenging situation for both sides.”
This bombshell suggests Pickens could miss valuable voluntary offseason workouts while both sides navigate the high-stakes negotiations. The Cowboys placed the franchise tag on Pickens earlier this offseason, but the receiver is reportedly holding out for a lucrative multi-year commitment.
Pickens’ Stellar Track Record
Pickens has long shown flashes of elite potential. In his first three NFL seasons with the Steelers, he amassed over 2,800 receiving yards. His standout year in Pittsburgh came in 2023, when he posted 63 catches for 1,140 yards and five touchdowns.

His 2025 breakout in Dallas validated the Cowboys’ decision to acquire him, turning him into one of the league’s most productive wide receivers. Yet the lack of a swift extension has created uncertainty for a player many believe is worth a major payday.
Steelers’ Wide Receiver Struggles After the Trade
The Steelers, meanwhile, felt the absence of Pickens in 2025. After trading him away, Pittsburgh had already brought in two-time Pro Bowl wideout DK Metcalf via trade and extension. Metcalf led the team with 850 receiving yards and six touchdowns, but he was the only wide receiver to surpass 500 yards.
The rest of the receiving corps struggled: Calvin Austin III finished second among wideouts with just 31 receptions for 372 yards and three scores. The offense relied heavily on tight ends and running backs in the passing game, supplemented by veterans like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Adam Thielen.

Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers (then 42) shouldered much of the load despite a fractured wrist, throwing 25 total touchdowns and helping Pittsburgh win the division for the first time in five years. In response, the Steelers added two-time 1,000-yard receiver Michael Pittman Jr. this offseason to bolster the wide receiver room alongside Metcalf.
What’s Next for Pickens and the Cowboys?
Pickens proved he can be a game-changing talent, but the contract impasse highlights the tricky business side of the NFL. With the July deadline looming, both sides face a challenging negotiation window that could impact Dallas’ preparation and potentially force Pickens to play 2026 on the franchise tag if no deal is reached.
As the situation develops, NFL fans and insiders will be watching closely to see whether the Cowboys can lock up their star wideout long-term or if more drama—and possibly a dramatic resolution—is on the horizon.
