Giancarlo Stanton quickly realized during Monday’s game that he has still the speed of Giancarlo Stanton.

Stanton and the New York Yankees faced off on Monday against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Wash. In the top of the fourth inning, the Yankees designated hitter Stanton hit a towering fly ball into shallow field off Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo.

While the ball should have been a can of corn for the Seattle defense, Mariners teammates Brendan Donovan and Randy Arozarena lost the ball in the stadium lights. Stanton’s pop fly then landed in between them for an unlikely base hit.

Unfortunately for Stanton, he tried to press his luck further from there. Stanton attempted to take second base off the misplay … and was promptly cut down for the second out of the inning.

The ex-MVP Stanton, who stands 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, is known as one of the slowest players in Major League Baseball. He is now a full-time DH at 36 years old and has not even attempted a stolen base since the 2020 season.

While almost every other MLB player would have been able to take second base on that Seattle miscue, Stanton did not stand a chance, especially since he was jogging out of the batter’s box. That also brought back bad memories for Yankees fans as Stanton’s baserunning has been a problem for years now (including in the playoffs).
