Las Vegas, NV – March 2026. Derek Carr is back on the NFL radar after a brief hiatus. The four-time Pro Bowler, Derek Carr, has announced plans to return for the 2026 season.
Carr retired in May 2025 to address a shoulder injury. However, after recovering, he’s now ready to return to the NFL. This news comes just as the free agency market reaches its peak.

Carr had an impressive career with Oakland and New Orleans, accumulating over 41,245 yards and 257 touchdowns. His arm strength has fully recovered and reached “Pro Bowl peak,” thanks to specialized throwing coaches.
NFL teams that were concerned about a lack of quality quarterbacks now have a proven starter available. However, Carr isn’t just seeking a new contract—he’s aiming for a Super Bowl ring.
“I told my agent: if the right situation and coaching staff are there, I’m ready. My shoulder feels the best it has since 2016. The fire is back,” Carr shared in a recent interview.
Carr’s return path won’t be easy. He retired while still under contract with New Orleans Saints. The Saints still hold his rights, so a trade will be necessary.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are a top contender for Carr’s services. With uncertainty in the AFC North, head coach Mike McCarthy needs a veteran leader. Additionally, a return to Las Vegas Raiders remains a possibility.
If no deal is reached before the April draft, a move after June 1st could occur to maximize cap flexibility. Regardless, Carr’s return promises to be one of the most exciting stories of the 2026 NFL season.
