Michael Irvin played 12 seasons for the Dallas Cowboys, retiring with 750 receptions, nearly 12,000 yards, and 65 touchdowns. Alongside Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith, he won three Super Bowls in the 1990s and entered the Hall of Fame in 2007.
Since retiring, Irvin has been a mainstay in sports media. In late 2025, he started Playmaker Production Group to produce original films and documentaries. However, his recent life hasn’t just been about business.
He has faced significant personal grief, including his wife Sandy’s ongoing battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s. And the recent death of his close cousin, former NFL player Johnny Graham, added to the grief.
Michael Irvin shares quiet moments from cousin Johnny Graham’s gathering
The Fort Lauderdale native is the 15th of 17 children in his family. His parents, Walter and Pearl Irvin, raised a massive household, including children from both parents’ previous marriages and nine children they had together.

His family lived in a modest house on 27th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Due to the big size of the family, Irvin famously noted that he never had his own bed until he went to college, often sleeping on floors or bunk beds with four to six siblings to a room.
But among all the members, his bond with Johnny Graham was quite special. They played ball on the same streets Irvin did. However, Graham passed away recently.
Irvin, who was not a fan of Super Bowl LX, posted a tribute to his cousin on Instagram after a family gathering. The first post was a photo of Graham in a Miami Dolphins jersey, which is a nod to their shared South Florida roots. Irvin captioned it, “🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 JOHNNY 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 REST IN PEACE FOREVER ❤️❤️❤️❤️.”
A second video showed a quiet, private side of the service. It captured friends and family embracing and mourning together without any media fanfare. It was a simple, personal goodbye to a man who was clearly loved by those closest to him.
