New York Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried kept the San Francisco Giants lineup quiet on Opening Day. The Yankees would go on to win 7-0 on March 25 at Oracle Park while the Giants‘ ace, Logan Webb, had a challenging night against New York’s batters.
The Yankees’ bats did their damage in the second inning as New York exploded for five runs against Webb. Moreover, the Yankees added two more runs in the fifth inning, as that was all they needed to get the win over the Giants.
Trent Grisham and Ryan McMahon each had two-RBI performances as they did the damage to Webb that would seal the win for New York. Meanwhile, the big bat in the Yankees’ lineup that had a big performance was Giancarlo Stanton , who had two hits and one RBI.
As for the Giants, Fried had San Francisco’s bats frustrated, as they had only two hits off him in 6 1/3 innings. Matt Chapman went 0-for-3 with one walk and gave credit to Fried for keeping him and his teammates quiet throughout the night.
“You feel good in spring training, then you come out, and you don’t score any runs,” Chapman told reporters after the loss . “I mean, that’s just baseball sometimes. I wouldn’t put too much stock into it. We have a really good group. First game of the year, sometimes it doesn’t go your way.
“We had [Fried] a little bit early in the game, and then he settled in and didn’t make many mistakes, so he looked really good. Tip your cap, and I think we’re not going to change, and we’re ready for [March 27].”
Logan Webb Gets Blunt About His Outing Against the Yankees
San Francisco’s bats didn’t wake up to help Webb out as the right-hander went five innings, giving up nine hits and six earned runs. After the Opening Day loss to New York, Webb spoke to reporters and was blunt with his thoughts on his disappointing performance.
“I mean, it just sucks,“ Webb told reporters (h/t KNBR ). “I put our team in the position we’re in. First inning was great. Second, I get the guy to ground out on the first pitch of the inning, and then all hell broke loose. That’s on me.”
Tony Vitello Talks Logan Webb’s Outing Against New York
Meanwhile, Giants manager Tony Vitello broke down what he saw from Webb’s outing and what went wrong for his ace.
“Hit by pitch kind of played into that deal, but it wasn’t really wild from my perspective,“ Vitello told reporters (h/t 95.7 The Game ). “Of course, you always go back and watch the video. He’s attacking, and they were attacking. They got to him early in the count a few times, and [the Yankees] seemed to make a little bit of an adjustment to be more aggressive.
“But overall, he’s a ground ball pitcher, and the ball got elevated a couple of times. And again, it’s not like those guys were launching balls over outfielders’ heads or over the fence, but they stacked their hits together. And some of that came from the bottom of the order that had success, too.”
