It was a challenging Opening Day for San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb. The Giants ace went five innings, giving up nine hits and six earned runs against the New York Yankees in the 7-0 loss on March 25 at Oracle Park.
The Yankees’ bats did their damage in the second inning as New York exploded for five runs against Webb. Moreover, the Yankees added two more runs in the fifth inning, as that was all they needed against the Giants.
San Francisco’s bats didn’t wake up to help Webb out, as the team recorded only three hits. After the Opening Day loss to New York, Webb spoke to reporters and didn’t hold back his thoughts on his disappointing performance.
“I mean, it just sucks,” Webb told reporters (h/t KNBR ). “I put our team in the position we’re in. First inning was great. Second, I get the guy to ground out on the first pitch of the inning, and then all hell broke loose. That’s on me.”
Tony Vitello on Logan Webb’s Rough Outing
Meanwhile, Giants manager Tony Vitello broke down what he saw from Webb’s outing and what went wrong for his ace.
“Hit by pitch kind of played into that deal, but it wasn’t really wild from my perspective,” Vitello told reporters (h/t 95.7 The Game ). “Of course, you always go back and watch the video. He’s attacking, and they were attacking. They got to him early in the count a few times, and [the Yankees] seemed to make a little bit of an adjustment to be more aggressive.
“But overall, he’s a ground ball pitcher, and the ball got elevated a couple of times. And again, it’s not like those guys were launching balls over outfielders’ heads or over the fence, but they stacked their hits together. And some of that came from the bottom of the order that had success, too.”
Moreover, it wasn’t as though it was a strong performance from New York’s top hitter. Aaron Judge went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, while Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice had one hit apiece.
Nonetheless, it was the Yankees’ role players who did damage to Webb, as Trent Grisham and Ryan McMahon each had two-RBI performances. The big bat in the Yankees’ lineup that had a big performance was Giancarlo Stanton, who had two hits and one RBI.
Giants Look for Bounce Back Performance
The Giants have to sit on this loss until March 27, when they have an afternoon game against New York. San Francisco will be looking to bounce back on all aspects, as the pitching and hitting weren’t what they probably expected for the first game of the season.
“This is a half-painful, half-easy press conference to do because it was pretty straight up,” Vitello added (h/t KNBR ). “Like I said, whichever phase you pick out, we just weren’t as good as we’re capable of being tonight. And [New York] played well, so it worked out the way that it did.”
It’s only Game 1 of 162, but the Giants want to give out better feelings as they want to show that they can challenge for the NL West division.
