The Pittsburgh Steelers are still facing an unknown situation at the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers remains a free agent and hasn’t made a decision regarding his NFL future.

At this point in time, the expectation is that Rodgers will return for at least one more season. Should he choose to do so, he would have the opportunity to reunite with new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, who was his coach with the Green Bay Packers as well.
Rodgers would also be coming back to a new and improved Pittsburgh offense.
McCarthy will run a system very familiar to Rodgers and the Steelers made a trade with the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason to acquire Michael Pittman Jr. Having DK Metcalf and Pittman as his top two targets would have to be interesting to the future Hall of Fame quarterback.
With that being said, Pittsburgh is going to need a replacement for Rodgers, whether it be this season or in the future. Here are four obvious options they should consider.
Steelers Must Consider These Four Aaron Rodgers Replacements
Anthony Richardson is one name to keep a close eye on for the Steelers. They have already pulled off one trade with the Colts this offseason, why not make it a second?
A former No. 4 overall pick, Richardson hasn’t been able to stay on the field due to injuries and has been inconsistent when he has played. Despite those facts, he has top-tier raw potential and wouldn’t cost Pittsburgh much in a trade.
The second potential choice could be Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Many mock drafts have had the Steelers selecting Simpson with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. If he’s available when Pittsburgh is on the clock, it would be a wise choice.
Drew Allar is a sleeper option in the NFL Draft. The Steelers would likely able to snag him in the middle rounds. He’s worth consideration as well.
Finally, Pittsburgh could simply keep its faith in former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard. He was drafted in the sixth round of the draft last year. The Steelers like his potential and another year of development could have him ready to play.
Aaron Rodgers Returning Is the Ideal Situation for 2026
If Rodgers does choose to retire or surprisingly signs with another team, Pittsburgh would be in trouble next season.
On the flip side, Rodgers showed that he can still play at a high level last season. He completed 65.7 percent of his pass attempts for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 16 games played.
Should the Steelers be able to bring Rodgers back for another season, they will be a contender in the AFC. They have a very talented roster in place outside of quarterback.
Expect to hear more news about Rodgers in the near future. These four options would be wise to consider both for 2026 and beyond.
