Could the Boston Red Sox land Washington Nationals star C.J. Abrams with this trade pitch?
The Boston Red Sox are entering the 2026 season with the expectation of taking another major step forward. The 2025 season was a success for the Red Sox, as they made the playoffs for the first time since 2021 after finishing the campaign with an 89-73 record.
The Red Sox responded to their strong 2025 season by bringing in multiple new players to their roster. Among the most notable are Willson Contreras, Ranger Suarez, Sonny Gray, Caleb Durbin, and Johan Oviedo. With this, the Red Sox have boosted their roster a bit and will be aiming for even better results in 2026 because of it.
However, the Red Sox also notably lost star infielder Alex Bregman in free agency to the Chicago Cubs. With this, it is fair to argue that they could use another star in their infield, and they are now being linked to a potential blockbuster trade that would help them land just that.
New Boston Red Sox Trade Pitch Lands Washington Nationals Star Infielder CJ Abrams
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Kerry Miller made seven blockbuster trade pitches ahead of the 2026 season. One of them involved the Red Sox, and it would certainly be a big move if it came to fruition.
In Miller’s trade pitch, he had the Red Sox acquire star infielder CJ Abrams from the Washington Nationals in exchange for Connelly Early, Jake Bennett, and Hector Ramos. Miller also mentioned that the Red Sox’s need for another star infielder and the team’s familiarity with Nationals’ president Paul Toboni could potentially help the two teams strike a deal centering around Abrams.
“Boston is probably the best fit. Not only are there question marks throughout that Red Sox infield, but that’s where Paul Toboni had spent the past decade before becoming Washington’s president of baseball operations. He knows that farm system and that organization about as well as anyone, and the Red Sox clearly enjoy negotiating with their former executives, already acquiring both Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras from St. Louis since Chaim Bloom took the helm there,” Miller wrote.
With the Red Sox needing another impactful infielder and Abrams being available, it would make a ton of sense if they pushed hard to land him. He would immediately give their roster a major boost, and that would be huge when noting that Boston is in an incredibly competitive AL East division.
Why This Red Sox-Nationals Abrams Trade Pitch Would Benefit Both Teams
If the Red Sox added Abrams, they would take another step closer to being legitimate contenders this season. The one-time All-Star just had another strong season for the Nationals, as he had 19 home runs, 31 stolen bases, 35 doubles, and a .257 batting average. With numbers like these, he would make an impact for Boston in multiple ways and give them a much-needed proven star in their infield.
As for the Nationals, the return of Early, Bennett, and Ramos would help improve their prospect pool as they continue rebuilding. Early is currently ranked as the Red Sox’s third-best prospect, while Bennett is their seventh. As for Ramos, the Nationals would be taking a chance on an intriguing infield prospect.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Red Sox and Nationals can swing a deal centering around Abrams. It looks like there could be a good fit here on paper.
