CHICAGO – Chicago Cubs great Ryne Sandberg’s prostate cancer has relapsed and spread to other organs. The Baseball Hall of Famer shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday morning. Sandberg, 65, will undergo more intensive treatment.

“We will continue to be positive, strong and fight to beat this,” Sandberg said in a statement. “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family.” Sandberg revealed his metastatic prostate cancer diagnosis in January and then announced in August he was cancer-free after getting clear scans.

“The support has been tremendously overwhelming right from the first week and it’s continued throughout,” Sandberg told the Chicago Tribune in June before his statue was unveiled in Gallagher Way outside Wrigley Field. “It’s just been incredible and I think that’s been as much medicine to me as anything really.”

Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement Tuesday: “Ryne is an inspiration to cancer survivors everywhere. … Ryne has the heart and soul of a champion and that will serve him well in this challenge.”
