Chies quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, is also recovering from an injury.
After suffering an ACL tear in December, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes faces a long road to recovery.
Mahomes’ goal is to be ready to start Week 1. He’s spending “seven hours a day” at the training facility, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters in February. While a typical recovery timeline puts his earliest return in mid-September, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt believes the three-time Super Bowl MVP could defy the odds.
“I wouldn’t put it past him,” Hunt told Good Morning Football. “He’s somebody in the past who has healed very quickly and, again, his work ethic, I think, gives him a huge advantage in getting back and being ready to play in 2026.”

In the meantime, Kansas City secured an insurance policy, trading for quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick. Fields, the No. 11 overall pick from the 2021 NFL draft, started nine games last season, completing 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, “Fields now will get ample reps during the off-season and training camp, and could potentially play early in the season depending on Mahomes’ recovery.”
While Mahomes is working hard on rehab, he’s also spending quality time with his wife, Brittany Mahomes, and their three children, Sterling, 5, Bronze, 3, and Golden, 1. Amid the family’s tropical vacation this week, Brittany, a former professional soccer player, shared a major update on her injury.
Brittany Mahomes Feels ‘No Pain’ 2 Years After Back Fracture

GettyBrittany Mahomes shares an update on her back injury.
Before the start of the 2024 season, Brittany revealed she suffered a back injury one year after welcoming Bronze.
She wrote on her Instagram Stories at the time, “Just your daily reminder, once you have kids, please take care of your pelvic floor. Seriously. From: A girl with a fractured back.”
Fast-forward to March 18 — Brittany posted a video of herself lifting heavy weights at the gym on her Instagram Stories. She wrote, “Never thought I would see the day of doing (kinda heavy) deadlifts again with no pain 😭🙏🏻 man they felt good.”
Yves-Richard Dole, MD, an ob/gyn with Metropolitan OB/GYN, explained to Women’s Health that Brittany’s injury is “relatively uncommon.”
“The pelvic floor is connected to the lower back, and each of the bones are connected together by a series of ligaments and tissue,” Dole said. “If there is a lack of stability, it can lead to further injury,” which can be especially risky for active women like Brittany, who loves to strength train.
The 30-year-old’s personal trainer, Kirsty Rae, gushed over her client’s progress in January. She wrote on her Instagram Stories, “Almost a year and a half, rehabbing a broken back meant severe pain and limited movement. Now, almost a year postpartum and progressively getting stronger every week.”
She noted how Brittany is “proof that the body is capable of incredible things when you meet it with patience and intentional training.”
Patrick Mahomes Is Leaning on Brittany’s Support Amid His Rehab
While Mahomes was active with the kids amid Brittany’s injury, now his wife is picking up the slack.
“I think that’s kind of pushed me through some of those mental hurdles, and that, as well as having a great wife that is able to keep me involved with the kids,” Mahomes told reporters of his recovery in January. “And the kids understanding that dad can’t necessarily be the dad that I usually am, throwing them around the couches and stuff like that.
“I think that’s been good for my mental is just being around the kids, and being around the family and have a lot of great people around me.”
Mahomes was still wearing a leg sleeve in photos from the family’s vacation this past week.
