Red Sox vs. Orioles Spring Training Game Canceled Due to Weather at Ed Smith Stadium

A scheduled spring training matchup between the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles on Monday has been officially canceled due to expected severe weather conditions in Florida.

The game was set to take place at Ed Smith Stadium, the Orioles’ spring training home. However, with thunderstorms forecasted for the Sarasota area later in the evening, team officials announced that the contest would not be played and no makeup date is scheduled.

Orioles Announce Cancellation on Social Media

The Orioles confirmed the decision in a public statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that worsening weather conditions forced the organization to call off the game entirely.

According to the announcement, not only was the game canceled, but fan access to the back fields at Ed Smith Stadium was also suspended for the day due to safety concerns related to the approaching storm system.

Weather forecasts indicated the possibility of thunderstorms developing around 5 p.m., which ultimately led the teams and league officials to make the precautionary decision.

World Baseball Classic Absences Affect Both Teams

MLB news: Why Red Sox-Orioles spring training game was canceled on Monday

Another storyline surrounding the matchup was the absence of several players currently competing in the World Baseball Classic.

Among them is Orioles star Gunnar Henderson, who recently delivered a standout performance during the international tournament. Henderson hit a massive home run in a win over the Dominican Republic national baseball team, helping propel his national squad deeper into the competition.

With several players participating in the WBC, both the Red Sox and Orioles have relied heavily on depth players and prospects during spring training games.

Even so, the remaining roster members are still using these exhibitions to prepare for the upcoming MLB season.

Orioles Still Have Several Spring Training Games Remaining

Although Monday’s game will not be rescheduled, the Orioles still have plenty of opportunities left in their spring training schedule.

Their next exhibition game is scheduled for Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers. After that matchup, Baltimore will have seven additional spring training games before the start of the regular season.

For fans hoping to attend a game at Ed Smith Stadium, the remaining home opportunities are limited. The Orioles will host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday and the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday before the team heads north to Baltimore.

Those two contests represent the final chances for ticket holders to attend spring training games at the Sarasota venue this year.

Red Sox Preparing for Braves Matchup

Meanwhile, the Red Sox will also return to action on Tuesday when they face the Atlanta Braves in another spring training contest.

Boston still has eight games remaining on its preseason schedule before Opening Day arrives. These games are critical for evaluating roster depth, finalizing rotation decisions, and preparing players for the grind of the upcoming season.

Spring training results may not count in the standings, but they often provide valuable insight into how teams are shaping up ahead of the regular season.

Spring Training Weather Disruptions Are Common

Game cancellations due to weather are not unusual during spring training in Florida and Arizona. Afternoon thunderstorms frequently develop during this time of year, particularly in coastal regions like Sarasota.

Because spring training schedules are tight and travel logistics are complex, teams rarely reschedule canceled exhibition games. Instead, they simply move forward with the remaining schedule.

While fans may be disappointed to miss the matchup, both teams remain focused on getting their rosters ready for the long MLB season ahead.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 MLB Season

As spring training winds down, the Red Sox and Orioles are both continuing preparations for the 2026 campaign.

Baltimore is looking to build on its recent success and remain competitive in the Major League Baseball American League standings. Meanwhile, Boston is working to refine its roster and return to postseason contention.

Even though Monday’s exhibition was washed out, both clubs still have valuable opportunities ahead to fine-tune their lineups, rotations, and bullpen strategies before Opening Day arrives.

For now, fans will have to wait until the next scheduled matchup to see these two historic franchises take the field again. ⚾
