The San Francisco 49ers have been active early in the offseason as the franchise works to recalibrate its roster and manage its salary cap heading into the 2026 campaign. San Francisco made several additions in free agency, including wide receiver Mike Evans and a reunion with linebacker Dre Greenlaw, while also reinforcing depth along the offensive line with veterans Vederian Lowe and Brett Toth. At the same time, the 49ers have also seen multiple departures as the front office reshapes the roster.
One of the more unexpected developments came when edge rusher Bryce Huff announced his retirement at just 27 years old. Huff, who joined San Francisco via trade in 2025, stepped away after a six-season NFL career that included 24 sacks and 108 tackles. His sudden departure leaves the 49ers thinner along the defensive front and removes a rotational pass-rushing option opposite star defensive end Nick Bosa.

With Huff no longer a 49er, the front office has quickly moved to create additional financial flexibility on Saturday by adjusting Bosa’s contract. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the 49ers executed a simple restructure of Bosa’s contract, clearing $17.172 million in 2026 salary cap space.
Bosa remains set to earn $23.18 million this season, while the move shifts money into future years, pushing his 2027 cap number to $54,866,753.
Bosa has been the centerpiece of San Francisco’s defensive front since the team selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He made an immediate impact by winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and later captured NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors during his dominant 2022 season.
Over the course of his seven-year career, Bosa has recorded 192 solo tackles, 86 assists, 64.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries and two interceptions. He has also established himself as one of the league’s premier edge rushers, consistently leading the 49ers in pressures and sacks.
His 2025 season was more turbulent after he suffered a season-ending torn ACL against the Arizona Cardinals in September. Even so, the organization continues to view Bosa as the foundation of its defense. With Huff now retired , the expectation is that a healthy Bosa will once again anchor the defensive front and lead the 49ers’ pass rush.
