Red Sox Eye Major Trade After Duran Shines on World Stage

The Boston Red Sox have every reason to be thrilled with Jarren Duran’s standout performance in the World Baseball Classic. The All-Star outfielder was on fire, hitting .333 with three home runs over four games for Team Mexico. This impressive showing not only boosts his stock but also opens up intriguing possibilities for the Red Sox, especially in the trade market.

There’s a growing buzz around the idea of Boston leveraging Duran’s recent success to make a strategic move. The proposal on the table involves trading Duran for Kansas City Royals All-Star pitcher Cole Ragans, a player the Sox have had their eye on throughout the offseason. Bringing Ragans into the fold would bolster Boston’s rotation, potentially slotting Brayan Bello into the fifth spot that the team has been eager to fill.

Duran is undeniably a talent worth holding onto. When he’s at his best, he’s a dynamic five-tool player capable of leading a team.

However, the Red Sox find themselves in a fortunate position with their outfield depth. Even without Duran, the lineup featuring Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu remains one of the league’s finest.

Plus, there’s the flexibility of using Masataka Yoshida as a designated hitter. This depth allows Boston to entertain the idea of trading Duran for a pitcher of Ragans’ caliber.

Cole Ragans, when healthy, is nothing short of a Cy Young contender. He finished fourth in the AL Cy Young voting in 2024, leading the league with an impressive 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

Although 2025 was marred by injuries, Ragans is now fully recovered and poised for a comeback. His past performance includes an 11-9 record in 2024, with a 3.14 ERA, 223 strikeouts, and a 1.143 WHIP over 186 innings.

His FIP of 2.99 that season underscores his potential to dominate when backed by solid defense.

Financially, Ragans is an attractive option as well. He’s in the second year of a three-year, $13.25 million contract, with an additional year of arbitration ahead. This cost-effective deal makes him an even more appealing target for the Red Sox.

Adding Ragans to a rotation that already features Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suarez, Sonny Gray, and Brayan Bello could elevate Boston’s pitching staff to new heights. If the Red Sox are committed to strengthening their defense and making a serious run, this trade could be the key to unlocking their full potential.
