Braves Prospect Didier Fuentes Dominates Yankees in Spring Start, Shows Major League Promise
In what has been an electric spring training for the Atlanta Braves, Didier Fuentes continues to turn heads with his dazzling performances. The 20-year-old pitching prospect took the mound against the New York Yankees and put on a show, tossing three perfect innings, striking out five batters along the way.

Fuentes was in full control, attacking the strike zone with his fastball and showing off his sweeping off-speed pitches. His dominance on the mound included a standout moment when he got Ernesto Martinez, the Yankees’ DH, on a called strike on the knees with a fastball — a call that was upheld after an ABS challenge. That strikeout capped his day at five, an impressive total for the young prospect.
A Perfect Spring So Far
On the season, Fuentes has now logged five innings, striking out nine and not allowing a single hit or earned run. The only blemish on his record is a hit-by-pitch he allowed to the first batter he faced this spring. Since that moment, Fuentes has been perfect, showcasing the poise and precision that has many scouts excited about his potential.
Though he didn’t face the Yankees’ heaviest hitters, such as Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton, Fuentes still faced a formidable lineup that included the likes of Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger, and Ryan McMahon. A year ago, Fuentes struggled against much lesser hitters, and the fact that he was able to retire these established major league bats without any trouble is a significant improvement from his previous outings.
A Step Forward After a Tough 2025
It wasn’t long ago that Fuentes was thrown into the deep end of the major league waters, and the results were far from what he had hoped for. Called up midway through 2025 as the Braves dealt with a series of injuries, Fuentes made four starts but struggled mightily, giving up 20 earned runs over just 13 innings (a staggering 13.85 ERA). What really hurt him during that stretch was the six home runs he allowed, highlighting just how unprepared he was for the big league stage.
However, Fuentes has clearly made strides since then. His spring performances, including this dominant outing against the Yankees, show he has taken significant steps forward. After being sent down to Triple-A to refine his skills, Fuentes began to settle in. In his final two starts of the season before his shoulder injury, he posted a much-improved 1.00 ERA, allowing just one earned run in 11 innings.
A Bright Future Ahead
At just 20 years old, Fuentes still has plenty of time to develop and improve. The Braves are in no rush to throw him into the starting rotation, as his experience in the majors last year showed he still has work to do. However, his spring training performance is a clear indicator that he’s moving in the right direction.

Fuentes is still a few years away from being ready for a full-time major league role, but this spring has been a crucial stepping stone in his development. Even if he doesn’t see the majors again for another season or two, he will still be young and full of potential when the time comes. The Braves’ future rotation could very well include Fuentes, and with continued development, he could become a key piece in their pitching staff.
For now, Fuentes will continue to work on his craft, and if his spring performance is any indication, it won’t be long before he’s knocking on the door of a permanent role in the major leagues. With his electric stuff and continued progression, Fuentes’ future in Atlanta looks incredibly bright.
