The San Francisco 49ers made arguably the biggest move of the NFL’s free agency period so far by signing future Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans to a three-year deal worth $60.4 million. This deal gives San Francisco a clear-cut No. 1 wide receiver for Pro Bowl quarterback Brock Purdy to throw to.

Evans spoke to the media on Thursday in Santa Clara for the first time since being traded. The longtime Buc chose to sign with the Niners because he believes he could be the team’s missing piece for a potential Super Bowl run.

After 12 seasons in Tampa Bay, Evans is now a 49er. Here is what he had to say specifically about why he chose to come to the Bay Area:

It can’t get any more confident than that from the former Super Bowl champion. At 32 years of age, despite coming off an injury-plagued 2025, Evans is still one of the league’s best receivers. His 11 straight seasons to start his career with at least 1,000 yards receiving are the most ever. Now, he looks to have the same impact on a stacked 49ers offense that includes stars like Purdy, All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, and, when healthy, All-Pro tight end George Kittle.

The 49ers Desperately Needed Mike Evans

This was a signing that the 49ers needed to make. The San Francisco front office is looking to release veteran wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, although it may not happen immediately. Furthermore, receiver Jauan Jennings is a free agent, and former 49ers pass-catcher Kendrick Bourne signed with the rival Arizona Cardinals. GM John Lynch needed to make a move at that position, and he made a massive splash.

Now, the 49ers have a stacked offense, especially if they can find a way to keep 12-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams. After a 12-win regular season last year, this team looks primed to contend for a title. Still, it will have to compete in a brutal NFC West with the likes of the 12-win Los Angeles Rams and the Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks. Seattle ended up going 4-2 in the division and earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

However, here come the 49ers. With the addition of Evans, along with veteran defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa, they have sured up some of their most pressing needs. They also have seven picks within the first four rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft. As the offseason progresses, the roster continues to get stronger and a little healthier. After all, the roster has never been the problem under the leadership of Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. Health has always been the biggest divider between the team from the Bay Area and a Super Bowl title.
