Los Angeles Dodgers Receive Positive Update on Blake Snell as Opening Day Approaches
After an offseason filled with concerning updates on Blake Snell, the Los Angeles Dodgers finally received some good news regarding the left-hander. Snell, who has been dealing with shoulder issues, took a significant step forward in his recovery as the season opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks draws closer. On Monday, March 9, Snell threw off the mound, marking a crucial development in his journey back to full health.
The $182 million pitcher, who has been slowly ramping up his activities over the offseason, made the progress under the watchful eye of the Dodgers’ medical staff. As reported by David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports, Snell’s throwing session on March 9 involved him throwing off the mound with a catcher standing up, indicating that the veteran southpaw is moving closer to returning to his role in the rotation.
A Long Road to Recovery for Blake Snell
Snell’s offseason recovery has been anything but smooth. After suffering from shoulder inflammation early last season, he was placed on the injured list in early April. The injury kept him sidelined for nearly four months, and Snell was only able to make a career-low 11 starts in his first year of a five-year deal with the Dodgers. As a result, it is not expected that Snell will be ready for the upcoming 2026 campaign, and the team is taking extra precautions with his recovery process.
Despite the rough start to the season, Snell showed impressive resilience upon his return. After coming back from the shoulder injury last year, he posted a 2.41 ERA with an outstanding 32.7% strikeout rate over his final nine regular-season outings. His success didn’t stop there; Snell carried that momentum into the postseason, delivering several critical performances for the Dodgers.
Snell’s Playoff Performance: A Mixed Bag

In the postseason, Snell continued his solid play despite a couple of setbacks. He cruised through seven innings of two-run ball with nine strikeouts against the Cincinnati Reds in the Wild Card round, and he also shut out the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the NLDS. In Game 1 of the NLCS, Snell delivered another scoreless outing, keeping the Milwaukee Brewers off the board for eight frames.
However, Snell’s World Series performance wasn’t as smooth. In Game 1, he gave up five earned runs to the Toronto Blue Jays. Although he was pitching well through five innings, the Blue Jays exploded in the 6th inning, tagging Snell for nine runs and forcing him to leave the game with the bases loaded and no outs. Snell allowed another five earned runs in Game 5, giving up solo homers to Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the first inning. Though he settled in later, he tired in the 7th inning, allowing the deficit to grow.
Despite these struggles, Snell redeemed himself in Game 7 of the World Series. After entering with a leadoff double in the 8th inning, he stranded the runner, and although he faced a bases-loaded jam in the 9th, he was able to help set the stage for Yoshinobu Yamamoto to escape unscathed.
Dodgers’ Rotation Plans: Who Will Step Up?
With Snell’s gradual return, the Dodgers’ rotation is expected to look different this season. While the veteran left-hander is still working his way back, Roki Sasaki is expected to return to a starting role after spending some time closing last season. Sasaki struggled early in the year and then dealt with a shoulder injury but found his rhythm in the bullpen, eventually becoming a key postseason contributor.
Gavin Stone, who seemed poised to secure a spot in the rotation, likely will not be part of the mix due to a setback with his own shoulder injury. This will likely clear the way for Emmet Sheehan, who recorded a 2.82 ERA in 15 appearances last year, including 12 starts. Tyler Glasnow and Shohei Ohtani are also expected to anchor the Dodgers’ rotation, with Yamamoto potentially leading the charge.
As the Dodgers look to build a championship-caliber pitching staff, Snell’s recovery remains a crucial storyline to watch. If he can regain his form from last season and remain healthy, he could play a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ quest for another World Series title.
