Fan-favorite SF Giants player Pablo Sandoval has played nearly every season nonstop since his pro career began all the way back in 2004. However, he tells John Shea of The San Francisco Standard that he does not plan to play in 2026.

This was a great piece by Shea by the way, so please do give it a read! Sandoval’s fifth child was born during the winter, and he now wants to shift gears and be a coach for his children.

Sandoval is among the many guest instructors in camp. Sergio Romo, Marco Scutaro, Javier López, Jeremy Affeldt, Hunter Pence, Joe Panik, and Brandon Belt are just some of the names from the championship era who are helping out in camp this spring. In addition to this, Will Clark, Jeff Kent, and Rich Aurilia have all been working as guest instructors.

Sandoval has been a regular presence in Giants camp over the past few seasons. More recently, this has been as a guest instructor. However, he returned to the Giants on a minor league deal in 2024 to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

The three-time World Series champ did not make the team in spring training that year, but did get a final send-off from the fanbase in one of the final exhibition games. He turned to the Atlantic League, which has become a popular landing spot for a lot of former major league players.

Sandoval played for the Staten Island FerryHawks and put up a .675 OPS with 23 home runs and 142 RBI across two seasons. He still had a knack for driving in runs, which is not too dissimilar to the player he was earlier in his career. Sandoval also got a chance to throw off the mound toward the end of the 2024 season.

The 14-year major league veteran joined the Giants as an international free agent in 2003 out of Venezuela. He was not considered a top prospect by any means, but everything seemed to click for him in 2008, leading to a meteoric rise through the system that culminated with a promotion to the major league club. That season was one of the bigger surprises by any prospect in baseball in recent memory.

Sandoval’s career in the majors concluded after the 2021 season. He collected 69 plate appearances with the Atlanta Braves before being shipped to the Cleveland Guardians and subsequently released.

Sandoval’s emergence with the Giants was a sign of things to come. The Giants had not fully clicked in 2008, but you could feel that they were building something special.
