🚨 NEW YORK YANKEES SEND SPENCER JONES DOWN: Manager Aaron Boone’s Message to Top Prospect 👇
The New York Yankees have made the difficult decision to option outfield prospect Spencer Jones ahead of Opening Day, despite his impressive showing during spring training. Jones, one of the Yankees’ top prospects for the past few years, was hoping to secure a spot on the MLB roster. However, with Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham added to the team, alongside Randal Grichuk and Jasson Dominguez competing for the fourth outfield position, the Yankees decided to send Jones down to the minors for now.
Despite the setback, manager Aaron Boone offered a message of encouragement to Jones. “Don’t focus on things that right now might be out of your control a little bit,” Boone said, emphasizing the importance of staying focused and keeping a positive mindset.
Boone also expressed his admiration for Jones’ performance during spring training, which has provided a solid foundation for his development in the minors. “The reality is, he’s coming off a really strong season. He continues to make really solid adjustments. He came in here this spring and has represented really well and has performed. You’ve seen the signs of him continuing to get better,” Boone added.
In his nine spring training games, Jones posted an impressive .333 batting average, with three home runs, a double, seven RBIs, and a 1.344 OPS. He spent most of his time in center field, but also played one game in left field, showing the Yankees that he has the flexibility to fill multiple spots in the outfield if needed. Despite his strong performance, the outfield positions for the Yankees are set for now, meaning Jones will begin the season in Triple-A.
Aaron Judge on Spencer Jones’ Swing
Not only did Boone see promise in Jones, but so did Aaron Judge, who also took note of the adjustments the young outfielder made to his swing. According to Judge, Jones’ new approach could be a game-changer for his success in the MLB.
“The minute (Jones) puts that foot down with that little toe-tap, he’s ready to hit,” Judge said. “They might have gotten him with a lot of high heaters in the past, or even last season. That’s just going to help him. He doesn’t have a big leg kick and doesn’t have to worry about trying to get that down. … That quickness, that readiness — it’s really going to be a game changer for him.”
Jones’ Journey to the Yankees
Spencer Jones was selected by the Yankees with the 25th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. Since then, he has been considered one of the team’s top prospects, and fans have been eagerly awaiting his MLB debut. While he’s yet to make his MLB appearance, there’s still a chance he could see action in the big leagues this season, especially with the adjustments he’s making to his game.
Boone Addresses the Yankees’ Outfield Depth

With the Yankees’ crowded outfield, Boone knew making roster decisions would be a challenge. The Yankees already have several established outfielders, and Boone acknowledged the tough decisions they would need to make during spring training. Appearing on MLB Network, Boone shared his thoughts on the outfield situation, and his belief that both Jones and Dominguez are MLB-caliber players.
“Well, we think very highly of both of those guys and they’re young players that are continuing to develop and get better,” Boone said. “And in Dominguez’s case, it was a 22-year-old last year that really had a solid year and grew a lot, and he’s also a guy that’s missed a lot of time with different injuries in the Minor League. So, it’s both guys we think are going to be really, really outstanding Major League players.”
Despite Jones being optioned to Triple-A, Boone believes in both prospects’ futures with the Yankees. While it’s possible Dominguez could also be sent down to gain more consistent playing time, the Yankees are high on their two young outfielders and see them as integral pieces for the future.
As the Yankees begin their season, all eyes will be on the outfield competition. While Jones won’t break camp with the big league squad, his journey to the MLB is far from over. With his potential, strong spring training performance, and support from Judge and Boone, Spencer Jones is poised for success in the near future, and fans will be eager to see him take the field in the Bronx when the time is right.
