Astros Rethink Trading Isaac Paredes After Surprising Development

The Houston Astros have been navigating some tricky waters this offseason, particularly with their corner infield situation. Christian Walker’s hefty contract hasn’t matched his on-field performance, making him a tough piece to trade. The Astros are still figuring out their next move with him.

Isaac Paredes, on the other hand, had a stellar season, boasting a 123 OPS+ and 20 homers in 438 plate appearances. Despite these impressive numbers, the return of Carlos Correa to third base has left Paredes in a bit of a limbo, relegated to first base or designated hitter duties. While these roles aren’t necessarily negative, they don’t fully harness his potential.

Negotiations with teams like the Red Sox haven’t panned out, but this might not be the worst scenario for Houston. The Astros’ infield might seem overcrowded, but considering their recent injury woes, Paredes could find himself with an opportunity to shine.

The Dominican national team’s exhibition game against the Tigers saw Jeremy Peña, their starting shortstop, suffer a fractured finger, sidelining him for the World Baseball Classic and possibly beyond. This opens the door for Correa to slide back to shortstop, potentially freeing up third base for Paredes temporarily. Correa’s own injury history adds another layer, possibly securing Paredes a roster spot even when Peña returns.

Still, being a backup isn’t the ideal solution for Paredes or the Astros. The team continues to seek trade partners, but for now, Paredes stands as a crucial asset, ready to step in while Peña heals.

He’s proven himself as a reliable contributor and deserves regular playing time in the majors. The Astros’ infield congestion is a tough break for him, but it also presents an opportunity for the team to strengthen other areas once a suitable trade is found.

Until then, Paredes will be pivotal in maintaining the Astros’ infield stability.
