The Texas Rangers are gearing up for a pivotal 2026 season, one that could define the trajectory of the franchise for years to come. After their triumphant World Series win in 2023, the Rangers have missed the playoffs in the last two seasons, leaving fans eager for a return to glory.
Last season’s struggles were largely due to an underwhelming offense, which ranked 26th in the league in OPS (.683). Despite boasting the league’s best ERA (3.47) and clinching the American League team Gold Glove Award, the Rangers finished with a middling 81-81 record.
In response, Chris Young, the president of baseball operations, made strategic moves to bolster the lineup. He traded second baseman Marcus Semien to the Mets for outfielder Brandon Nimmo, a consistent performer with an OPS+ above 100 since 2017.
Young also made the tough decision to non-tender struggling hitters Adolis García and Jonah Heim, while signing veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen to add right-handed depth.
The pitching staff, already a strength, received a boost with the addition of lefty MacKenzie Gore via trade and the signing of lefty Jordan Montgomery, who is on the mend from Tommy John surgery and expected back mid-season.
Working within a tight budget, the Rangers have made calculated efforts to improve. The health of key players like Corey Seager, Evan Carter, Jacob deGrom, and Nathan Eovaldi will be crucial. While an injury to any of these stars wouldn’t necessarily derail their playoff hopes, it would undoubtedly be a setback.
Optimism surrounds the Rangers, but challenges remain. MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger has expressed skepticism about their playoff chances, even predicting a potential trade of ace Jacob deGrom at the Trade Deadline.
Amsinger’s prediction suggests that if the Rangers find themselves struggling by mid-season, moving deGrom could be a strategic decision. With his contract running through 2027 and a history of injuries, trading him could save money and provide opportunities for younger pitchers. However, if the Rangers are in playoff contention, keeping deGrom would be essential to their success.
As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Texas to see if they can reclaim their spot among baseball’s elite or if mid-season adjustments will become necessary.
