Dallas Cowboys Were “In the Mix” for Linebacker Quay Walker Before Raiders Deal
The Dallas Cowboys were actively exploring options to strengthen their defense during the early stages of NFL free agency, and one of the players reportedly on their radar was linebacker Quay Walker. However, despite their interest, Walker ultimately chose a different destination.
According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the Cowboys were “in the mix” for Walker and even held a Zoom meeting with the linebacker on Monday as part of their recruitment process. The virtual meeting indicated Dallas had legitimate interest in adding the former first-round pick to its defensive unit.
In the end, though, Walker agreed to a three-year, $40.5 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, taking one of the more notable defensive players off the free-agent market.
Cowboys Continue Search for Defensive Reinforcements

Dallas’ interest in Walker highlights the team’s continued effort to improve the linebacker position heading into the 2026 season. The Cowboys’ defense has been one of the strengths of the roster in recent years, but injuries and roster turnover have created a need for additional depth and athleticism at linebacker.
Walker, known for his speed and sideline-to-sideline range, would have been a natural fit in the Cowboys’ defensive scheme. His ability to defend both the run and the pass has made him a valuable asset since entering the league.
The team’s willingness to meet with Walker—even virtually—suggests that the front office is seriously evaluating multiple options as they reshape the defense this offseason.
Raiders Land a Key Defensive Addition
While Dallas missed out, the Raiders secured a significant upgrade.
By signing Walker to a three-year deal worth $40.5 million, Las Vegas continues to invest heavily in its defense as it attempts to rebuild and remain competitive in the AFC.
Walker brings youth, athleticism, and experience to the Raiders’ linebacker corps. His presence should immediately strengthen the middle of their defense while adding versatility to the defensive scheme.
The move also signals that the Raiders are aggressively pursuing talent during free agency to support their long-term roster plans.
What This Means for the Cowboys

Even though Walker chose Las Vegas, the Cowboys’ involvement in the process demonstrates that the team remains proactive in addressing roster needs.
Free agency often involves pursuing multiple targets before ultimately securing the right fit. Missing out on Walker does not necessarily mean Dallas will stand pat at linebacker.
The Cowboys could still:
-
Pursue other veteran linebackers on the market
-
Target defensive talent in the upcoming NFL Draft
-
Explore trade options to strengthen the defense
Given the team’s emphasis on maintaining a strong defensive identity, it’s likely that Dallas will continue looking for ways to reinforce the position before the 2026 season begins.
Free Agency Still Early
With the NFL offseason just getting underway, many roster moves are still expected across the league. Teams are carefully evaluating available talent while balancing salary cap considerations and long-term planning.
The Cowboys’ attempt to sign Quay Walker shows that they are actively involved in the free-agent market—even if not every pursuit results in a signing.
As the offseason progresses, Dallas fans will be watching closely to see what the team does next to strengthen the defense and prepare for the upcoming season.
