The Buffalo Bills lost a longtime backup to quarterback Josh Allen, then brought back his close friend to re-fill the role of No. 2.
Previous backup Mitch Trubisky will be leaving the team, agreeing to sign a new contract with the Tennessee Titans as the backup to second-year signal-caller Cam Ward. With Trubisky gone, the Bills made quick work of finding a veteran backup to replace him ā one who is very familiar with Buffalo and close to Allen.
Bills Wrap Up Quarterback Search Quickly
ESPNās Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the Bills came to terms with veteran quarterback Kyle Allen, who spent the 2023 season in Buffalo as the backup to Allen.
āSource: Former Lions QB Kyle Allen Is signing a two-year, $4.1 million deal worth up to $6.1 million with the Buffalo Bills, where he will reunite with his close friend Josh Allen,ā Schefter reported in a post on X.
The Bills have not needed much from their backup quarterbacks in recent years, with Allen not missing a game due to injury since his rookie season. The Bills quarterback left the season finale both in 2024 and 2025 after taking a snap, maintaining his starting streak before handing the game over to Trubisky.
There had been speculation that the Bills were ready to cut ties with Trubisky as early as last summer, when they brought in veteran Mike White to compete for the No. 2 spot. Syracuse.com reporter Ryan Talbot predicted at the time that the Bills could land on White, who was more willing to take chances on the field.
āWhite will need to be better than he was in the regular season finale last year, when he completed just 3-of-11 passes for 28 yards against the Patriots, but his willingness to push the ball down the field gives him a chance over Trubisky, a quarterback known for dinking and dunking the football,ā Talbot wrote.
The Bills will hope to see little of the other Allen this season, hoping Josh Allen can remain as healthy as he has in past seasons.
More Changes for the Bills
The Bills have been making some deep changes since firing head coach Sean McDermott and elevating offensive coordinator Joe Brady to the top post. The team went through some of its annual cap cutting, parting ways with a trio of defensive backs ā cornerbacks Dane Jackson and Taron Johnson and safety Taylor Rapp ā as well as wide receiver Curtis Samuel.
The Bills also added a new potential No. 1 receiver, landing DJ Moore in a trade with the Chicago Bears.
As ESPNās Alaina Getzenberg and Courtney Cronin reported, the Bills paid a high price and made a strong commitment to Moore.
āBuffalo is sending a 2026 second-round draft pick to Chicago in exchange for Moore and a 2026 fifth-round selection, sources told Schefter,ā the pair wrote.
āThe Bills will be guaranteeing $15.5 million of Mooreās $23.5 million base salary in 2028, agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey told Schefter. Mooreās $23.5 million base salary in 2026 is fully guaranteed, and his 2027 base salary, also $23.5 million, becomes fully guaranteed next week.ā
