As the San Francisco Giants gear up for the new season, one of the most intriguing storylines is the open competition for bullpen roles, particularly the closer position. While the team has kept the field wide open, all signs point to Ryan Walker stepping back into the closer role as the season kicks off.
The Giants initially planned a head-to-head competition between Walker and Joel Peguero for the closer spot. However, Peguero’s hamstring injury, which recently worsened, casts doubt on his availability for Opening Day.
This development could pave the way for pitchers like Michael Fulmer or Gregory Santos to make the roster. Both have impressed during spring training, with Santos showcasing the kind of high velocity that could eventually earn him a spot in high-pressure situations.
With Peguero sidelined, Walker appears to be the front-runner for the closer position. Of course, this could shift as the season progresses, especially if Walker struggles or if someone like Santos steps up.
The Giants have been vocal about their hopes for Walker to bounce back after a challenging season. It’s not uncommon for relievers to experience ups and downs-one year they’re dominant, and the next, they’re struggling.
Walker’s 2025 season wasn’t disastrous, though. He posted a 4.11 ERA, 3.30 FIP, and a 1.27 WHIP, with 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings and a solid 3.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 61.1 innings. He also notched 17 saves in 23 opportunities, numbers that are respectable for a lower-leverage role.
Last season, Walker began as the Giants’ closer but lost the job to Camilo Doval after some shaky outings. He was thrust back into the role late in the season due to injuries and trades that depleted the bullpen.
Manager Bob Melvin had limited options by season’s end, making it difficult to manage the bullpen effectively without the right personnel.
This spring, Walker has made a couple of appearances, striking out four and walking just one in two innings. With limited alternatives, he seems poised to reclaim the closer role as the season begins.
