The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the teams expected to be active during the NFL free agency period, which kicks off on March 11 and allows teams to sign available free agents who were just let go from their previous franchises.
The free agency period is always packed with excitement and with the Las Vegas Raider looking to get Aaron Rodgers back as their quarterback, expect them to bolster their offensive line to please him.
In a Friday, March 6, feature for Fox Sports, Greg Auman, Ben Arthur, Henry McKenna, Eric Williams and Ralph Vacchiano discuss the Pittsburgh Steelers’ situation and the available free agents. They see running back Rico Dowdle of the Panthers being a solid addition to the team’s offense and someone who could work with Rodgers.
“Their top need changes if quarterback Aaron Rodgers retires, but assuming they’re running it back one more time with The Ancient One, it would be nice if they got him some help,” they note in the piece. “Yes, they need receivers, but a strong rushing attack would really help keep the pressure off their 42-year-old quarterback.”
Fox Sports adds that Kenneth Gainwell, their MVP last season, is a free agent and “likely headed elsewhere. Meanwhile, Dowdle had his breakout season in Dallas under new Steelers coach Mike McCarthy two years ago. He could be the top half of a strong, 1-2 punch with Jaylen Warren that could power the Steelers while McCarthy pieces together a passing attack.”
In a Friday, March 6 feature for SI, Schuyler Callihan says that the Panthers should let Dowdle walk and let him be a free agent.
“Ideally, the Panthers would be able to move forward with the tandem of Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard, but Rico’s comments at the end of the season made it seem like he was leaning toward leaving for an expanded role,” he states in the piece. “Can you blame him? If they can offer him a reasonable deal, sure, but it’s not worth getting into a bidding war, so probably best just to let him go be an RB1 somewhere.”
