The Buffalo Bills have undergone quite a bit of reshuffling ahead of the start of free agency, cutting ties with some longtime veterans and restructuring contracts in order to create much-needed cap space.
Josh Allen may be the next in line.
The quarterback is expected to get a major contract change of his own, one that would free up more space for the team to address needs and find players that fit into new head coach Joe Brady’s plans.
Bills Expected to Make $12 Million Move on Josh Allen
Reporters Sal Maiorana and Ryan Miller of the Democrat & Chronicle noted that the Bills have already restructured the contract of one major player on offense, and Allen is likely coming next.
“Last week, offensive tackle Spencer Brown’s contract was re-worked to free up $10.4 million, and in the coming week, the contract of quarterback Josh Allen will be restructured which will create $12 million in space,” their report noted. “You may also see the contracts of offensive lineman Dion Dawkins and defensive lineman Ed Oliver altered, though Beane doesn’t want to pull too many of those levers.”
The Bills do have some other opportunities to save cap space, including a potential restructure or pay cut for tight end Dawson Knox.
Their report quoted Bills general manager and president of football operations Brandon Beane, who said the team is trying to find a balance between adding more cap space now without pushing too much of that money forward.
“As we did with Spencer Brown, we’ve already kicked the can down the road on some money there, and we may have to do that with someone else,” Beane said. “But I also want to be mindful, as I tell you guys, I don’t want to put too much of that down the road to where we walk into a year and we’ve got a major problem just to get under and now we’re just cutting players just to get to the draft and we’re really fielding a team that’s not set up for success.”
Beane has often taken a long-term approach, trading wide receiver Stefon Diggs in 2024 out of caution of his coming cap hit and declining production.
Bills Parted Ways With Other Players
The Bills already made some other moves in the name of cap compliance, cutting ties with cornerbacks Dane Jackson and Taron Johnson, safety Taylor Rapp, and wide receiver Curtis Samuel to free up space.
While the team will need room to sign free agents and their upcoming draft class, the moves also help the team make way for the biggest addition so far this offseason — wide receiver DJ Moore. The Bills landed Moore in a trade with the Chicago Bears, adding a potential new No. 1 receiver for Allen.
The Bills will face some other decisions that have less to do with financials. Third-year wide receiver Keon Coleman ran into trouble last year, being benched twice for disciplinary reasons and watching his production drop from his rookie year. Some insiders have suggested the Bills could part ways with Coleman, though he did get a vote of confidence from Beane.
