Cubs Face Tough Choice as Slugger Eyes Free Agency Exit

In the world of baseball, tough decisions are often the name of the game, and the Chicago Cubs are facing a big one. With both Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki set to hit free agency at the end of the season, the Cubs have a choice to make. It’s a classic case of wanting to have it all but needing to make a call.

The Cubs might only be able to keep one of these fan favorites, especially if Pete Crow-Armstrong inks a hefty long-term deal. So, who should stay?

Ian Happ, who made his Major League debut back in 2017, has become a cornerstone for the Cubs. He’s not just the longest-tenured player on the roster; he’s also bagged four consecutive Gold Glove Awards in left field. That’s no small feat.

While both Happ and Suzuki are 31, Happ’s versatility and defensive prowess might give him the edge. According to FanSided’s Zachary Rotman, Happ’s all-around skills make him the more valuable asset, suggesting Suzuki might be the one to let go.

In 2025, Suzuki showcased his power with 32 home runs, surpassing Happ’s 23. He also led in slugging percentage and OPS. However, Happ’s defensive skills and ability to switch-hit add layers to his game that Suzuki, who’s mostly seen as a designated hitter, doesn’t quite match.

As Suzuki approaches his mid-thirties, his role might become even more DH-focused, which could influence the Cubs’ decision. It’s a classic baseball conundrum: offense vs. defense, power vs. versatility. The Cubs will need to weigh these factors carefully as they look to the future.
