🚨 JADEN IVEY’S FUTURE IN DOUBT: Bulls Guard Continues Knee Recovery in Crucial Week – Can He Return This Season? 👇
Phoenix, AZ – The Chicago Bulls are heading into a critical stretch of the season, and one of the most pressing questions surrounding the team is the future of guard Jaden Ivey. After suffering a significant setback with a broken left fibula in January 2025, Ivey’s road to recovery has been long, and now he’s in the midst of a crucial part of his knee-strengthening program back in Chicago.
Will Ivey Return This Season?
The obvious question on everyone’s mind is whether Ivey will be able to return to the court this season. Bulls head coach Billy Donovan is holding out hope, but he emphasized that it’s still very much a wait-and-see situation. Ivey is currently on a 10-day road trip, and while he’s continuing his knee-strengthening program back at the Advocate Center, the medical staff will need to see more improvement before giving him the green light.
“That’s going to be really, really critical,” Donovan said on Thursday regarding Ivey’s time away from the team. “He’s made strides and he’s gotten better, but the medical guys want to see some improvement in that strengthening. Two weeks passed a few days ago, now he’s got this third week, and he’s gotten stronger, but to make another jump there are certain things the medical guys are going to want to see and have him cross some thresholds.”
Ivey’s Setback and Road to Recovery
Ivey’s road to recovery has not been easy. Last season, while playing for the Pistons, Ivey suffered a heartbreaking injury on January 1, 2025, breaking his left fibula. After a period of rehabilitation, he made his return to the court this season, but he wasn’t the same explosive player he had been before the injury. When the Bulls acquired him, Ivey struggled to regain his former movement and athleticism, which became apparent to Donovan after just four games.
After complaining of knee soreness, the medical staff decided to shut him down for a few weeks in order to focus on strengthening the knee. This week marks Week 3 of his rehabilitation program, and the team remains hopeful that Ivey can make enough progress to return this season. However, as Donovan acknowledged, time is running out.
Mental Aspects of the Injury?
Given the lengthy recovery and the toll it’s taken on Ivey’s body, Donovan was asked whether there were concerns that the young guard was struggling with the mental aspect of his injury—perhaps not trusting his leg to perform at the same level. Donovan was quick to dismiss the idea that Ivey was mentally affected by the injury.
“I’ve never got that from him,” Donovan said. “He ended up going out and playing in Detroit. We could tell that in just the four games he was here he wasn’t moving great, and then he complained that his knee got sore, but I never got the impression that he was playing worried about it. I just felt like he wasn’t moving well.”
This response suggests that while Ivey’s physical limitations are clear, he isn’t mentally hesitant to play through them. Instead, the focus remains on physical recovery and regaining his strength.
Injuries Pile Up on Bulls’ Bench
While Ivey is trying to recover, the Bulls have also been dealing with a number of injuries to key players. On Thursday, the bench was crowded, but unfortunately, half the players were in street clothes. Matas Buzelis (ankle), Josh Giddey (right ankle), Patrick Williams (quad), Jalen Smith (calf strain), and Anfernee Simons (left hand) all sat out, leaving the team thin on depth.
The good news, however, is that the Bulls are expecting some reinforcements in their next game against the Sacramento Kings. Giddey, Buzelis, and Williams are all expected to return, which will provide a much-needed boost to the lineup. Simons and Smith, however, are still dealing with their injuries, and there is currently no timetable for their return.
Lachlan Olbrich’s Rookie Journey

One bright spot for the Bulls this season has been the development of second-round pick Lachlan Olbrich. The 6-8 Australian forward has appeared in 21 games, and his focus has been on building a strong foundation rather than worrying about immediate results.
“I didn’t know what to expect coming into it, obviously, but I feel like I built a really strong foundation,” Olbrich said after the game. “I’ve been talking a lot about foundation and hopefully in the next couple seasons I can really build on it.”
Olbrich’s mindset of focusing on growth and learning rather than the pressure of immediate expectations is a healthy approach for any rookie, especially in a challenging season like this one for the Bulls. “That’s really been the focus. I’m not worried about the minutes or the games played, anything like that. It’s just been a massive learning experience for me in my first year, which has been good for me.”
Olbrich’s dedication to learning and developing during his rookie season bodes well for his future, as the Bulls continue to evaluate the potential of their younger players for the long-term.
Looking Ahead: The Bulls’ Playoff Push
The road to recovery for Ivey, the return of key injured players, and the continued development of their younger players are all key storylines for the Bulls as they continue to fight for a spot in the playoffs. While their performance has been inconsistent this season, the hope is that as the team gets healthier, they can put together a strong push in the final stretch of the season.
With critical games ahead, including a matchup against the Sacramento Kings, the Bulls need to make the most of every opportunity to keep their playoff hopes alive. The potential return of Ivey and the reinforcements coming off the bench will be crucial for Chicago as they attempt to secure a spot in the postseason.
