šØ BILLY DONOVAN FIGHTS TO MAINTAIN FOCUS AMID BULLSā STRUGGLES: Coach Reflects on Roster Overhaul and Winning Mentality š
Phoenix, AZ ā Itās been a challenging stretch for Billy Donovan and the Chicago Bulls. With a difficult February (0-11) and a rough start to March, Donovanās focus has been put to the test. Despite a somewhat impressive 105-103 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, the long-term struggles are hard to ignore. After all, itās been a rough season overall, and Donovan is still adjusting to a roster thatās a work in progress after the trade deadline roster purge.
Donovanās Experience with Winning Basketball
Before Donovan became a key figure in Chicago, he was known for his success at Providence College. Under the guidance of Rick Pitino, Donovan transitioned from a young, struggling player to someone who had learned how to win. His journey continued as an assistant coach and then as a head coach, where his reputation as a consistent winner followed him. His success in both college basketball and the NBA is well-documented, but the Bulls have presented him with a unique challenge.
“I want to win,” Donovan said when asked about the teamās struggles. “Youāre competing to try and win, so absolutely you always want to do a good job and you want to be in position to win basketball games. Itās a result-oriented business.”
His words are telling. Despite the frustration of the last six weeks, Donovan remains fully focused on the task at hand ā helping the current roster improve and stay competitive. But with the roster reshuffling and many of the teamās players entering contract years, Donovanās job is anything but simple.
Roster Uncertainty and Trade Deadline Shuffling

The Bulls made significant changes at the trade deadline, parting ways with seven free-agent contracts and bringing in players on short-term deals. Anfernee Simons, Collin Sexton, Guerschon Yabusele, and Nick Richards could all be wearing different jerseys by the end of the season. Meanwhile, Donovan and the front office have important decisions to make regarding restricted free agent Jaden Ivey and second-year guard Rob Dillingham, who is still expected to live up to his lottery pick status from the 2024 draft.
Donovanās task is twofold: keeping the team competitive in the short term while also preparing for a potential roster overhaul in the offseason. Thursdayās game against the Suns was an example of that balancing act. Sexton scored a team-high 30 points, Yabusele contributed 16 (including a clutch corner three), and Richards chipped in with 9 points and 11 rebounds. Dillingham also had some flashes, putting up 11 points in just 20 minutes.
For Donovan, these performances are signs of progress for the players, even if they arenāt able to carry the team to victory every night. “Hopefully, I can help a guy like Rob Dillingham, who hasnāt had much of an opportunity,” Donovan said. “Same with Lenny [Miller] and some of these other guys. Can I help Matas [Buzelis] grow?”
These sentiments reflect Donovanās focus not just on the present, but on developing the younger players who will hopefully be part of the Bulls’ future.
Veterans Stepping Up Amid Tough Times
Despite the roster overhaul and the teamās struggles, veterans like Isaac Okoro continue to show up, providing leadership on both ends of the court. Okoro, who was tasked with guarding Phoenix’s Devin Booker throughout the game, was a standout on defense. After the game, Okoro shared his perspective on staying true to his role, even when the team is short-handed.
“Iāve always been an advocate of if youāre trying to do too much, doing what youāre not used to doing or doing stuff out of the ordinary, it doesnāt look good,” Okoro said. “People can tell by watching you play.”
Okoro’s consistency, especially in the defensive assignments, is a big reason why heās managed to stay in the league for six years. His focus on being a hard-nosed player and always putting his body on the line is exactly what Donovan needs from his veteran players in times of adversity.
“Iāve been able to be in the league six years because of the role and the player I am of trying to take the toughest assignment every single night,” Okoro added. “Whether we have a full roster or half a roster, Iāve always kept that mindset.”
Whatās Next for the Bulls?
With the win against the Suns, the Bulls were able to salvage some pride and keep themselves in the playoff conversation, though the road ahead remains rocky. Donovanās focus remains on managing the roster, improving player development, and ultimately, winning as many games as possible in a season full of uncertainty. The future may be unclear for some of the players, but Donovan remains hopeful that he can help guide them to success in the short term, while also preparing for the long-term rebuild ahead.
The Bullsā next challenge comes on Friday when they face the Phoenix Suns again. With much at stake for the Bulls, every game counts as they fight to stay relevant in the Eastern Conference.
