On Wednesday, the South Bay Lakers officially announced that guard Augustas Marčiulionis had left the team after reaching a buyout agreement in order to pursue a new professional opportunity overseas.

According to reports from BasketNews, the 23-year-old guard is returning to his home country of Lithuania to sign with Rytas Vilnius, one of the most prominent basketball clubs in the Lithuanian Basketball League.

The move represents a homecoming for Marčiulionis and a new chapter in his professional career after spending the early part of the season in the United States developing within the Lakers’ system.

Notably, Marčiulionis is the son of Šarūnas Marčiulionis, a legendary European guard who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for his contributions to international basketball and his role in popularizing European talent in the NBA.

Marčiulionis’ G League Performance

During his time with South Bay this season, Marčiulionis appeared in 29 G League games, providing solid production despite limited opportunities.

The Lithuanian guard averaged:

• 7.1 points per game

• 2.1 rebounds

• 3.9 assists

Perhaps even more impressive were his shooting percentages. Marčiulionis connected on 48.5% of his field-goal attempts and an outstanding 45.3% from three-point range, showcasing his efficiency as a scoring and playmaking guard.

His strongest performance of the season came in mid-January against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In that game, Marčiulionis delivered a standout effort, scoring 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting, while also contributing five assists and two steals.

However, despite flashes of strong play, his role within the team’s rotation became increasingly limited as the season progressed.

He explained that he had hoped for a change earlier but remained optimistic that an opportunity would eventually emerge.

Marčiulionis noted that South Bay also had Kobe Bufkin, a former first-round draft pick, on the roster before he was later called up to the Lakers’ NBA squad.

With so many guards competing for playing time, Marčiulionis primarily played in a reserve role.

According to the Lithuanian guard, he had hoped to secure a consistent spot in the starting lineup where he could demonstrate his full capabilities.

While he did produce several strong performances, he ultimately felt they were not enough to generate significant interest or a larger role within the organization.

Marčiulionis’ buyout marks the second midseason departure for the South Bay Lakers this year.

Earlier in the season, center Kylor Kelley also left the team after reaching a buyout agreement to pursue a professional opportunity in the Philippines.

Following Kelley’s exit, the organization quickly moved to reinforce its frontcourt by acquiring Malik Williams from the College Park Skyhawks.

The trade involved sending a 2026 first-round draft pick and a 2027 first-round pick—assets that originally passed through several teams, including the Rip City Remix, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, and the Osceola Magic.

Despite Marčiulionis’ departure, South Bay appears unlikely to immediately pursue a replacement guard due to the significant depth already present at the position.
