Kansas City, MO. The Kansas City Chiefs are exploring the quarterback market as they look to strengthen their depth behind superstar Patrick Mahomes ahead of the 2026 season.
Mahomes remains the unquestioned leader of the offense, but the team’s backup situation became uncertain late last season, prompting the front office to quietly explore experienced options who could provide stability if needed.
For most of the 2025 campaign, Gardner Minshew served as Kansas City’s primary backup quarterback.
However, his season ended abruptly in December after he suffered a serious knee injury that included a fractured tibial plateau. The injury required a long recovery period, leaving the Chiefs with questions about the immediate future of the QB2 position.
Because of that uncertainty, Kansas City has reportedly entered negotiations with a veteran quarterback who brings significant production and starting experience at the NFL level.
That player is Kyler Murray, the 28-year-old quarterback who has accumulated 23,653 total career yards, including 20,460 passing yards and 3,193 rushing yards. Known for his mobility and playmaking ability, Murray has long been considered one of the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in the league.
For the Chiefs, the potential deal also carries a financial advantage. Because Murray would be joining as a backup rather than a franchise starter, Kansas City would not need to commit to a massive long-term contract.
Instead, the team could structure a short-term, team-friendly deal that provides depth without disrupting the salary cap built around Mahomes and the core roster.
This financial flexibility is crucial for Kansas City, which continues to manage several large contracts while maintaining a championship-caliber roster.
Adding an experienced quarterback on a manageable deal would allow the Chiefs to strengthen their depth without sacrificing resources needed elsewhere on the team.
