Chicago Cubs Standout Dylan Carlson Faces Uncertain Future After Fluke Injury

Keep an eye on this development as it could shake up the Chicago Cubs’ spring training plans. Dylan Carlson, who seemed poised to secure the fourth outfielder spot, is now facing uncertainty after a hit by pitch might derail his momentum.

Carlson, having joined the Cubs on a minor league deal, has been making waves in Arizona. Before Monday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, he was hitting an impressive 5-for-11 with five walks. The switch-hitter continued to impress with a first-inning double and a scorching 105 mph line drive single in the third.

The 27-year-old is aiming to recapture the form he showed with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he posted a 2.4 fWAR season in 2021 and followed with a solid 1.9 fWAR in 2022. But consistency has been elusive, and Monday’s incident might be another hurdle.

During the game, Carlson was hit on the right elbow by an 89 mph cutter from Reds’ lefty Brandon Williamson. Although he stayed in the game initially, playing defensively in the fourth, he was soon replaced by Kane Kepley, the Cubs’ 2025 second-round pick.

The hope is that the Cubs’ decision to pull Carlson was purely precautionary. Taking a pitch to the elbow is no minor inconvenience, especially when the adrenaline fades. Carlson has shown promise this spring, and it would be a tough break for him to face a setback now.

Chas McCormick, Carlson’s main rival for the roster spot, is currently 5-for-20 with seven strikeouts in seven games. The competition remains tight, and Carlson’s situation adds an intriguing twist to the Cubs’ roster decisions.
