Albert Pujols Stuns Fans as Cardinals Legend Takes Unexpected Turn

Both have cut their teeth managing teams in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and they’ve made it clear they’re ready for the big leagues. But for those dreaming of them leading the Cardinals, it seems President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom has other plans.

The recent extension for manager Oli Marmol through 2028, with a club option for 2029, signals Bloom’s confidence in Marmol steering the Cardinals through their current rebuild. While the decision might not sit well with fans longing for a hometown hero at the helm, Bloom’s choice could be strategic. The Cardinals are laying down new roots, and thrusting a rookie manager into this challenging environment might lead to growing pains, especially for icons like Pujols and Molina, who are used to winning.

Molina, in particular, might find the media demands a tough adjustment. Known for his reserved approach, reminiscent of Tony La Russa’s philosophy, Molina might struggle with the constant scrutiny that comes with losses.

As for Pujols, while he might handle the media better, his ongoing personal services contract with the Los Angeles Angels complicates any potential return to St. Louis.

With Marmol locked in, Molina faces a decision: continue as a special assistant to Bloom, contributing during spring training and select regular season games, or explore managerial opportunities elsewhere. Pujols, too, might consider a shift if the Angels change direction from new manager Kurt Suzuki. While Cardinals fans might feel a sting of betrayal if either legend leaves, the reality of a rebuild means the team must prioritize long-term success over nostalgia.

Looking ahead to 2029, if the Cardinals are poised for a championship run, Bloom might consider a change at the helm. However, it’s unlikely that Molina or Pujols, given their current commitments and the allure they hold for other teams, will be the ones leading the charge.
