All of a sudden, there may be a path to the Miami Heat soft-tanking their way to a valuable lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. It’s a move that may not be all that characteristic, but one that would help appease fans of their long-time wish.

With roughly 20 games left in the season, the Heat are closer to a lottery pick than a top 6 seed in the Eastern Conference. If Miami wanted, there’s a path toward earning a top 10 pick. But they’d have to completely buy in toward tanking the rest of the way.

But even if the Heat just made a couple of small pivots, there’s a path toward a lottery pick. And if this team is indeed tired of being a “Play-In Tournament” team, there’s reason to believe that this could be the best path forward.

Plus, a shot to move up in the lottery may be valuable enough for a team that is quickly growing tired of the mediocrity.

How the Heat could soft-tank without any questions asked

With Norman Powell out for at least a week, there’s a scenario where the Heat could elect to shut him down for the rest of the season. With how much he’s battled injuries this year, it wouldn’t be that shocking if that happened.

Nikola Jovic continues to battle a back injury, and he’s likely going to miss more time. Sidelining him down the rest of the way could be an option the Heat exercises as well. Of course, those two moves wouldn’t make a huge difference for the Heat, as we saw over the weekend when Miami got a key win over Houston.

If the Heat is willing to embrace the soft-tank for the rest of the year, they’ll have to shut down Bam Adebayo and/or Tyler Herro the rest of the way. That would be the real pivot to look for.

Those are the two moves that would essentially be the Heat waiving the white flag for the rest of the season. Those are the moves that would help the Heat move up the Tankathon standings, perhaps even securing their shot at a lottery pick.

The value of a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft

In a loaded 2026 NBA Draft, having a late lottery pick could essentially be as valuable as a 5-8 selection. And if the Heat truly trusts their scouting department, there’s reason to believe they could get a franchise-altering player with even a late lottery pick.

At this point, adding an extremely talented lottery prospect would provide the franchise with much more value than another empty playoff appearance.

Perhaps most importantly, this is what the fans have been clamoring for. If the Heat is indeed serious about developing a young core, this is, without question, the best potential path forward for the franchise.

Fans are tired of the mediocrity. Fans don’t want the Heat to be bad, but, at this point, they’d rather be bad for the last 20 games than win their way into the playoffs (via the Play-In Tournament), only to work their way to an embarrassing exit. Just as they did last season.

Even though it may not be a blueprint that the franchise has not preached at all over the last few decades, a soft-tanking over the last 20 games of this season could go a long way in altering the future of this franchise.

The last time the Heat hit in the lottery, they got a franchise player who set them up for two decades. They may not be able to move up to a fifth pick (which they had when they drafted Dwyane Wade), but the shot of it in the lottery should be incredibly appealing at this point.

Fans don’t want to see another Play-In Tournament team flame out in embarrassing fashion in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. At this point, neither should the front office.

Embracing a soft tank the rest of the year could be a way to appease both the fans and the front office.
