The Boston Red Sox have been a whirlwind of trade activity over the past year, and Jarren Duran is currently swirling in the rumor mill. This offseason, the team made several notable acquisitions, bringing in players like Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Johan Oviedo, and Caleb Durbin. However, one trade stands out for all the wrong reasons: the Rafael Devers deal.
The decision to send Devers to the San Francisco Giants has not gone down well in Boston. It’s a move that could haunt the Red Sox for years.
The heart of the issue seems to be a communication breakdown. The Red Sox attempted to shift Devers from third base to make room for Alex Bregman, who they signed last winter.
When Triston Casas was sidelined for the season, they tried to transition Devers to first base, which only added to the confusion.
While Devers himself could have perhaps managed the situation better, the Red Sox hold the lion’s share of responsibility for how things unfolded. The fallout saw Devers heading to the West Coast, leaving Boston with Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, Jose Bello, and James Tibbs III in return, along with some financial relief from Devers’ contract.
That financial flexibility, however, came at a cost. With Alex Bregman now with the Chicago Cubs, the Red Sox’s offense is not what it once was.
Harrison was later traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for Caleb Durbin, and Hicks found a new home with the Chicago White Sox. Meanwhile, Tibbs and Bello, while promising, have yet to make a significant impact.
The absence of Devers is still keenly felt in the lineup, and the Red Sox have yet to recover from the loss. Until they find a player who can match Devers’ offensive prowess, this trade will loom large over the franchise. Even if they do find a replacement, the return from the Devers trade doesn’t seem to measure up to his value, leaving Boston to ponder what could have been.
