The New York Yankees had trade discussions with the Texas Rangers about star shortstop Corey Seager, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Sherman also mentioned that the Boston Red Sox had trade discussions with the Rangers involving Seager.

Corey Seager, who’s entering his age 32 season, is still regarded as one of the best shortstops in all of baseball. Seager posted a 6.2 WAR (wins above replacement) with a .271 batting average, 21 home runs, 50 RBI’s, and a .860 OPS in 102 games with the Texas Rangers in 2025. Seager was limited to just 102 games in 2025 due to two separate hamstring injuries in April and May, and then had an appendectomy on August 29th.

Seager in 2025 ranked in the 93rd, 92nd, and 95th percentiles for average exit velocity (92.9), barrel percentage (15.3), and hard hit percentage (53.6), according to Baseball Savant.

Seager is also still good defensively, posting a 4 OAA (outs above average) at shortstop in 2025, which places him in the 85th percentile, according to Baseball Savant.

Seager Has Lengthy Injury History

Seager, who will turn 32 years old in April, has had trouble staying on the field, though. Since signing with Texas during the 2021-22 offseason, he’s played over 150 games in a season only once, in 2022, when he played 151 games in the first year of his contract with Texas.

And from the 10-year, $ 325 million contract he signed with Texas just four years ago, he still has six years remaining, with over $189 million still owed to him, according to Spotrac. The Yankees had a chance to sign Corey Seager as a free agent during the 2021-22 offseason, but reportedly passed on pursuing him due to the Yankees’ top prospect at the time being shortstop Anthony Volpe.

Volpe, age 24, is entering his fourth season with the Yankees and has been disappointing, to say the least, struggling offensively and defensively in 2025 as the everyday shortstop.

Shortstop Could Still Be A Question Mark For Yankees In 2026

The Yankees have a question mark at shortstop heading into the 2026 season. Volpe is recovering from shoulder surgery he had during the offseason and is likely not returning until at least late April, if not early May. In the interim, infielder Jose Caballero is expected to take over at shortstop until Volpe returns.

Caballero, whom the Yankees acquired at the trade deadline from the Tampa Bay Rays last year, is a solid defender with the glove who can play multiple positions and get on base at a higher clip than Volpe.

There’s some irony to the fact that the Yankees had these discussions with the Rangers involving Corey Seager, considering they chose not to pursue him in free agency several years prior. But the logistical component, given Seager’s current age, contract, and extensive injury history, makes the odds of working out a deal seem rather unlikely.

However, if the Yankees revisit those conversations in 2026, they may still have a glaring hole at shortstop. The Yankees, in the meantime, will see what Caballero can do with more of a full season under his belt at shortstop. Then the question remains whether Volpe can improve from his 2025 season and the two years prior, because the time for Volpe to be an impactful player with the New York Yankees might be wearing thin.
