Aaron Rodgers Leaning Toward One More Ride in the Steel City, Adam Schefter Shares Major Update (Report)
Aaron Rodgers is expected to announce his decision about a 22nd NFL season by mid-March 2026. This is earlier than previous years when he took until late spring to decide.
According to league sources, the veteran quarterback is seriously considering a return to the Pittsburgh Steelers rather than entering retirement.

The chances of a return have increased following Pittsburgh’s recent coaching changes. The team recently hired Mike McCarthy as head coach. McCarthy and Rodgers spent thirteen seasons together in Green Bay, where they won a Super Bowl and formed one of the most successful partnerships in league history.
General manager Omar Khan has publicly noted that both parties are committed to a quicker resolution this offseason to allow the team to finalize its roster before the new league year begins on March 11.ESPN reporter Adam Schefter provided further clarity on the situation during a recent episode of his podcast. “The belief around the league is that the feeling is he’s supposed to give an answer by mid-March,” Schefter said. “Many people thought that there was no chance he’d be back. It certainly sounds like it is an absolute consideration, and it sounds like he’s more likely than not to be back today.”

During the 2025 season, Rodgers led the Steelers to an AFC North title while throwing for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns. Although the season ended with a loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round, Rodgers proved he remains a top-tier starter at 42 years old.
While he previously suggested the 2025 season might be his last, he has since backed off that stance. If he returns, the Steelers will likely need to adjust his contract to manage the salary cap for the 2026 season.

The 42-year-old quarterback is currently a free agent and has not yet decided between retirement and a 21st professional season. While there is no firm deadline for a decision, the front office expects a resolution earlier than last summer.
