The Kansas City Chiefs will have a big decision to make up front this coming free agency period as they look to get under the salary cap: should they move off right tackle, Jawaan Taylor?
Moving off Taylor, who has been average at best during his three-year stint in Kansas City, saves the team $20 million off the 2026 salary. So the answer really should be obvious.
However, he plays a premium position in offensive tackle, and the Chiefs have already restructured Patrick Mahomes‘ deal and cut defensive Mike Danna so that they are now within less than $6.5 million of being cap compliant.
It seems odd that they would make these financial moves if they are also planning to clear $20 million off the board, and based on the ostensible cost-benefit analysis of moving off Taylor, his cut should have been the first of all of them.
However, one right tackle who will not be changing teams this offseason – at least not at this point in time – is former Chiefs RT Andrew Wylie, who signed a two-year extension with the Washington Commanders on Monday.

Ex-Chiefs’ Andrew Wylie Had a Good Career in Kansas City
After bouncing around three practice squads in his first season in the NFL, having come into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2017, Wylie signed with the Chiefs in December 2017 and proceeded to spend the next five years in KC playing a variety positions across the offensive line.
Wylie played almost 60 games for the Chiefs, with his most natural position early appearing to be on the interior, before being moved to right tackle in 2021, a position in which remained in large part through the end of his tenure in the Midwest at the end of the 2022 season.
The Commanders saw enough from the Eastern Michigan grad to hand him a 3 year, $24 million free agent deal in March 2023 – the same free agency period in which the Chiefs signed Taylor to be his replacement.
Wylie Set to Remain in Washington For the Next Two Years
Wylie had an excellent year in 2024 as the Commanders reached the NFC Championship game, ultimately falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, but in 2025 lost his spot to rookie first round pick Josh Conerly Jr., who took up the right tackle role.
The 31-year old did start four games at guard in place of Sam Cosmi, who was still recovering from a torn ACL suffered in the playoffs in January 2025, in weeks 3-6 – but had only a bit-part role for the rest of the season until the Week 18’s meaningless win against the Eagles.
The $7.5 million over two years; or an average of $3.75 million per year; is hardly a starter’s contract, but it does reflect his value to the organization as a reliable veteran piece who can fulfill a number of roles across the line.
